Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo 2015

This is all amazing news!:D

Were the duikers labelled as Bay Duikers or are you guessing? I know the zoo had the species when WOD closed but I also heard they were sent a Red-Flanked Duiker so it could be those.

Little Blue Penguins are great! Can't wait for them to come although it sucks to loose the seashore enclosure...

Breheny shared a pic on twitter of the Little Penguins. While losing the former tenants of that exhibit is a loss, Little Penguins are such a gain. Visitors will stay longer and watch the Little Penguins. While Zoo Nerds want the diversity, Visitors overall will appreciate the Little Penguins. They're not a species you see often. There's what, a handful of Zoos and Aquariums with them? I wonder where these came from. Maybe New England Aquarium moved members of their various colonies?

last year the Bronx Zoo and the New England Aquarium were working towards getting little blues imported from Taronga Zoo in Australia, so they could be new birds.

I am 95% sure it was bay duiker

The Taronga Zoo imports have been in Boston for over a year. The aquarium has a colony on exhibit in the aqaurium, outside but indoors in the rehab center and more across the harbour in their offsite facility.

I agree it's a bit of a bittersweet arrangement. I personally hope the Forster's Terns can be moved outside to the Sea Bird Aviary at least. I've already seen the American Black Oystercatchers out there so we'll likely still see those. Little Blue Penguins are a great species and, as you said, will satisfy both zoo nerds and Joe Public. I hope the penguins get a bit of a deeper pool here, though.

For the duikers- they were unlabeled so I do not know what species they are, but from looking online they look like bay duikers.

For the Little Penguin exhibit: all the old species were still on exhibit yesterday: both terns species, oystercatchers and the ducks. Maybe they can work with the penguins? At least the terns since they are a flying species.

And from the twitter pic it looks like they have a dozen little penguins so that would make an active exhibit.

Maybe you should post your picture;):D

Interesting. Those three species combined with a dozen penguins kind of sounds like a squeeze. In fact, a dozen penguins by themselves sounds like a squeeze in that enclosure! Surely they're not all going on-exhibit.

BTW, the Children's Zoo opens May 30th:)

ah okay then. In that case I would say it is a good bet the Bronx penguins have come from there then, as the import was a joint one.

last year the Bronx Zoo and the New England Aquarium were working towards getting little blues imported from Taronga Zoo in Australia, so they could be new birds.

So I asked my Veterinarian friend about the Little Penguins. Last years import have no impact on the Bronx Zoos group of LP. There was an importation last month between Bronx Zoo, Louisville Zoo and Adventure Aquarium. No LP changed institutions between NE Aquarium, Cincinnati Zoo and Dallas World Aquarium. The LP destined for Louisville and Adventure Aquarium are still at the Bronx. The exhibits are under construction at Louisville and Adventure Aquarium.

So where are the birds from?

The domestic area has been open since last fall. It is larger in area than the old Children's Zoo. They also keep smaller animals:
2 dwarf zubu
3 miniature donkeys
Large group of goats- including at least 6 kids.
Two sheep species
Three or four alpacas
2 pigs (not sure what species)
Several domestic turkey
Dozens of chickens free roaming and in a coop
2 geese species and a pigeon coop.
Rabbits are also in the photo op area.
The tractor and water well area were also covered with kids.
The cows, llamas, horse and full size donkeys are gone.

The domestics area should already be open...

And I understand that, I just believe it is not worth going to the children's zoo without seeing the wild animals along with the domestics.

BTW I hope this doesn't make me sound like a domestics hater because I love farm animals

No I understand your reasoning.

Personally I'm not a big fan of domestics myself. I'm all for zoos having small domestics areas, but personally they're not my cup of tea.

Article in New York Times with video about the new Little Penguins. 24 of them are in the collection from a "Zoo in Sydney", I am going to assume that they came from Taronga Zoo.

Taronga Zoo would be a very safe bet, although Sydney Aquarium also has a group. The export may have also included individuals from other collections, but Taronga seems likely as the quarantine/export facility.

Just thought I might add, it's interesting how from the Asia parking lot you are very easliy able to see the markhor/himalayan tahr enclosure. I even saw a markhor resting on a rock right near the chain link fence.
