I spent the day at the Bronx Zoo yesterday, and more than once saw animals similarly enjoying themselves. The big gaur bull who has sired a bunch of calves was not letting one cow alone. Some poor woman was quite upset because she was unable to take a picture of the dwarf mongooses that wasn't "x-rated". There was even a pair of the good-sized tortoises in the ringed lemur exhibit that were going at it, and the male was surprisingly energetic for a tortoise. No grizzly bear action, though--they were all swimming.
 
How old is the polar bear and what does the zoo want to do with that exhibit when the polar bear passes away?
 
I shall be visiting the zoo sometime in between the 24-28. Any questions on what I should try to find?
Obviously I will see the Childrens zoo and little blue penguin

PS- I know i's a bit early for this but I want to make sure everyone puts in their question
 
Can you ask about getting Cheetahs? I know that AZA wants zoos who previously held cheetahs to get cheetahs again.
 
I am not too familiar with the layout of the Bronx zoo so I do not know, but are there any empty field exhibits that used to have hoof stock but then they got shipped out? Maybe they could go in there. I know there were some empty exhibits before.

I mean there are but they aren't really in great shape and aren't exactly suitable for Cheetahs in my opinion. I feel the zoo would need a space similar to the giraffe enclosure and then obviously have the proper housing but currently they have neither in African Plains.

And as STE said, the zoo might already have plans for that space.

Was at the Bronx zoo today. As usual it was wonderful. However looked as if the Aardvarks were off exhibit and possibly the Kiwi's. Tawny Frog mouths were in the Kiwi enclosure I am hoping this is just an addition.The Geladas were extremely active today something I do not usually see as most f the time they are resting. The Himalaya Highlands still remained closed and I also noticed a quezal no longer on display at the wob which was a major disappointment. On the monorail only one of the two Elephants "Patty" was on display. In the past two Elephants have always been on display hopefully just a routine change. Although the time at the zoo was enjoyable I cant help but wonder was the broke zoo better 5-10 years ago years ago? With the loss of the world of darkness being the major void.Certainly in 2009-2010 with Madagascar opened and the old attractions still not closed one would think that was certainly better then now. Unfortunately I did not visit in that time frame. If anyone has I would be interested in hearing your input. Also any information regarding the animals that were not on exhibit today if any one else has visited recently and noticed the same things.

The zoo was already planning on closing World Of Darkness before they were forced to due to financial reasons.
 
The aardvarks were there in May, as was the kiwi and quetzal. The kiwi can be hard to find, but last year they added the tawny frogmouths to the exhibit. The Himalayan Highlands has been closed on and off due to winter damage to the trees around the red panda exhibit. As for one elephant on exhibit, are you sure that wasn't Happy? She is kept alone while Patty and Maxine are always together. Also, Patty could have been out and Maxine was getting vet work.
As for your question about the zoo being better in 2008 (pre-crisis), yes there were a ot more animals and the World of Darkness closing and the Monkey House were losses, despite the thought they were going to close eventually. I believe if the financial crash did not happen the zoo would have closed to renovate those buildings and we would probably have new exhibits to discuss. However; in the past couple of years there have been signs of improvement.
Did you see the Children's Zoo renovation? The Little Penguins? Howabout the komodo dragons outside?
 
You are right it was Happy! I thought the Bronx zoo only had Patty and Maxine so I misheard Patty. I did not know they had 3 Elephants left. Perhaps the Kiwi I could not spot but with the Log having a windows there are few places for it to hide but it might have found a clever spot. I did see the Children's Zoo it was decent but the only real attraction for me was the Giant Anteater and the Squirrel Monkeys. The little penguins were out and swimming. I saw only one Komodo and they were inside. I was able to spot the Slow Loris in Jungle world. I felt the Savannah could use vast improvements as stated before by others has anyone mentioned adding the Giraffes,Elephants,Ostrichs and Rhinos in one giant field maybe move the lions to the other side in one of the vacant lots. Also how long have the Sectary Birds been gone as I thought I remember them recently.
 
The African Plains could use further improvements and I have heard the two abandoned paddock area is one of the next for development as the "African Safari" area. I also have thought combining the antelope and giraffe areas would be great as well as add the white rhinos to the zebra exhibit. I have not seen secretary birds in the gazelle paddock since the early 2000s.
It is nice to hear Happy was out. It does sadden me she is kept by herself and they haven't tried to introduce another elephant with her since Paddy and Maxine have attacked her in the past.
 
I think it would be cool if the Bronx Zoo got black rhinos. Black rhinos would be cool since theres none in new york or in new england, and I think the closest place in the northeast to find black rhinos would be Pittsburg, but I am not 100% sure.

The Bronx Zoo does not want to keep elephants, and if they did they couldn't add them to the savannah area since elephants are so expensive, and the bronx zoo always goes all-out on every project, raising everyone's expectations, and doing something new and creative almost every time, and I think they do not have the money to make a elephant exhibit which would achieve any of those incredible standards.
 
Wow I did not realize it has been that long since the Sectary Birds were there.The only two birds I saw were the Malibou Stork and the African Crane in the Savannah along with Peacocks and the Ostriches. This defiantly could be a cheap improvement by adding the Sectary Birds again perhaps with some ground horn bills. I remember the days where the Elephants were were the Rhinos currently are by the zoo center along with the Tapir were the Komodo is. It was a major attraction being able to view the elephants as opposed to a brief time on the monorail. My wish list for the Savannah would have to include Hippos and Bonobos the Bonobos would most likely become a major attraction as any member of the Chimpanzee family cannot be scene in the tri state area. Also it would add to the Bronx zoo's ape collection which in my opinion is lacking for a world class zoo Philadelphia features both Gorillas and Orangutans and is considered by most to be a step below the bronx. Also an easy addition on one with great impack could be Wildebeast by the Nyalas which I think has a massive amount of room for few species.
 
When I was there a couple of weeks ago, both elephants were in the yard and there was at least one aardvark on display. There seemed to be a fair number of new birds in the WOB, as evidenced by a number of temporary signs. Also, they reopened the WOB nursery, where there were two one month old Magellanic Penguins. The WOB exhibits have been refreshed and seem to be in the best shape in years, although the purpose of the trellis over the walk in the African Jungle escapes me.
