According to the zoo's Instagram, a Victoria Crowned-Pigeon chick hatched a few days before Christmas.

According to a photo recently uploaded into the gallery, the zoo has a new male Lesser Bird-of-Paradise.

I hoped for white tipped- the lighting confused me. It wouldn't surprise me if Bronx had gotten their hands on it, they are one of those zoos who tends to get what they want (so highly respected). Golden headed is still uncommon- only four zoos, I believe, in the USA.

This may be old news now(since the original question was from December) but they had Black & Rufous Elephant Shrew on display last Tuesday( the 8th) when I went to the zoo. Also, a very strange occurrence in World of Birds. I went to the window viewing the Cock of the Rock. Noticed one sitting very still on a branch. A keeper comes in and puts a pillowcase over it and ties the pillowcase under the branch. It was a mount!! Then she ties a pillowcase over another one in the back that I didn't see. They had two birds mounted on branches on exhibit??? Has anybody else seen this?
 
1) Great news about the elephant shrew! I'm assuming mouse house?

2) Did you ask the keeper what the heck was going on?

3) How realistic were these "mounds" and did you take a pic?
 
There is a chance they are using the mounts to stimulate display behaviour in the males.
 
1) Yes in the Mouse House, I believe where the Prevost Squirrel once was.

2) I didn't get to ask her. I didn't want to bang on the glass. It was from the second floor so she was down below and as soon as she put the pillowcases on, she was on her phone and after a few minutes I gave up.

3) Sorry, didn't get a pic but they were real birds that looked mounted. I thought it was real and then noticed it wasn't moving when she went up to put the pillowcase on it. It was very strange and frankly I was kind of in shock at what I was seeing.

4) Didn't notice any other birds in there but like I said, I was pretty much in shock at what I was witnessing.
 
There hasn't been a Prevost's Squirrel in the Mouse House in a long time and I'm not sure where they used to be. I'd guess the biggest enclosure in the diurnal half, at the end of the hall before the turn into the nocturnal half? By Rock Cavy and chinchilla?

As with every year, the zoo has reopened all their exhibits (hold for their monorail) as I see on the map. However, yellow highlighting has been placed over exhibits you need to pay for and for some reason the map looks a little dumbed down and smaller than the zoo actually is...

Edit: Just realized why everything looks smaller; there's a lot less trees shown. Hope they're not actually cutting them down.
