Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2020

I think they could start by opening the smaller indoor exhibits such as World Of Reptiles,World Of Birds,The Mouse House, and the Aquatic Bird House before opening the heavy-hitters like Congo,Jungleworld, and Madagascar.
Your list promotes the opening of smaller buildings where social distancing and ventilation are challenging over larger spaces where social distancing and ventilation are more suitable. What is your reasoning? The zoo could certainly limit admission into the buildings to foster social distancing

I see on the zoo's website that they are saying they will reopen July 20. Which is consistent with the expected start of Phase 4. But the initiation of the Phases has been slowed or rescheduled before

The zoos map has been updated for reopening:
  • The zoo will open for members on the 20th and all guests on the 24th.
  • Most of the zoo appears to be open. The only exhibits that are explicitly closed are the children's zoo, bug carousel, nature trek, and giraffe building. Other exhibits like Jungleworld, monorail and Congo Gorilla Forest are unclear from the map.
  • Several buildings will be open including both bird houses, world of reptiles and the mouse house.

Edit: Direct from their website "Bug Carousel, Carter Giraffe Building, Children’s Zoo, Nature Trek, Komodo Dragons in Zoo Center, and Camel Rides will temporarily remain closed."

All other WCS sites will open on the same days as the Bronx Zoo.

I got an email alerting to this. For the monorail my assumption it will be one family per car to meet NY State Guidelines. I am also assuming there will be controls at all the animal houses for how many people will be allowed in at a given time. Many of the outdoor trails have also been made one way (i.e. going through the Baboon Reserve, seeing the giraffe or wild dogs, seabird colony). The capacity will be 25-30% as NY State regulations allow for a higher percentage for outdoor attractions. I probably will not go until things cool down in September; but I will be curious to see how this all works out.

I would love to visit the state to go back to the Bronx Zoo (have not been in a year, the longest gap in my life). I also would love to visit family nearby, but Cuomo's 2 week restrictions from my state make that unlikely for a while. Whenever those restrictions get lifted though I definitely will want to check out the zoo again.

I'll probably be waiting until late August/early September to visit, and then will likely visit more than once in a short period of time :p This is the first year in nearly a decade that I haven't been to the zoo at least twice by now, and may be the first in that time that I don't visit at least 3-4 times before the end of the year.

From photos posted in the gallery, there are a few lifers for me on-exhibit and I'm excited to go try and find them! A reduced number of people at the zoo will be interesting as well.

Which lifers are you looking for? I will be excited to see the dholes on exhibit (and hopefully viewable).

Batagur kachuga and Platysaurus intermedius have had photos posted to the gallery from before the lockdown. I'm curious to see if any of the remaining confiscated vipers from last year have remained as well.

Forgive me since I'm probably reading into this more than I should, but did anyone else notice the indian rhino icon missing from monorail on the new map they posted?

I noticed that as well. Almost certainly an oversight with the quick redesign to the map. Considering the zoo has many rhinos and just brought in a new female last year.

This is almost certainly the case. Not every major species is going to be shown on the map, especially not a temporary reopening one. The zoo has something like 8 rhinos total across two species so I wouldn't worry too much.

Is it? The plan, as I saw it a few hours after the news broke, was always that July 20-23 was to be members-only preview days, and then the 24th was when the general public could start going.

I was thinking of visiting during the member preview days, but I am annoyed because my prior membership expired June 30th and as far as I've seen the zoo is refusing membership extensions for those whose memberships expired during the lockdown. Nearly half my membership time was during the lockdown...

EDIT: I may be wrong on the above, watch this space

So the zoo has yet to get back to me on the question of whether or not my membership has been extended, but they also just let me purchase a ticket for the members-only day July 23rd with it so I'm guessing the answer is yes :p

I look forward to visiting my old friend again.

Cuomo just announced this afternoon that NYC's Phase 4 will NOT allow any added indoor activities such as cultural institutions, so it looks like the zoo will not be able to open its buildings.
