Does anybody happen to know how many African Lions Bronx currently has.
They should have 3 males at the moment, here’s what I have down.

Bronx Zoo - 3.0 (3)
1.0 Thulani (M’wasi x Sukari) August 16th, 2013 at Bronx Zoo
1.0 Ime (M’wasi x Sukari) August 16th, 2013 at Bronx Zoo
1.0 Bahati (M’wasi x Sukari) August 16th, 2013 at Bronx Zoo

Yeah on their Facebook last year I saw one video of thulani and ime out together and another one of ime and Bahati out together. I’m sure there a reason why they don’t put all 3 out together but I would love to see them bring in a female or two to breed with one of the boys as they were successful at breeding this species a years back. I believe in a 5 year span of 2009-2014 they had 8 Cubs born over 3 different litters to parents Nala and Mwasi.

If their last pair really did produce 8 cubs, the SSP might not be jumping to breed the trio as their genes may be pretty well represented in the program. That's a max of 5 direct blood siblings already out there at other zoos probably on breeding recommendations. I do find it odd that the odd male out hasn't been shipped off elsewhere even if still not to breed, but I don't think it's entirely out of the question that these three males spend the rest of their lives at Bronx (they are 9 already) and potentially never get breeding recommendations.

I did some investigating and Sukari and M'wasi had 9 cubs that survived to adulthood:

(1) Moxy/Moxie (F) - DOB 11/6/08 - Honolulu Zoo
(2) Sahar (M) - DOB 1/27/10 - Rolling Hills Zoo - Deceased 9/27/19
(3) Asha (F) - DOB 1/27/10 - Zoo Miami - Deceased 3/27/14
(4) Kashifa (F) - DOB 1/27/10 - Zoo Miami - Deceased 3/22/21
(5) Amali (F) - DOB 3/6/13 - Louisville Zoo (she was raised at Seneca Park Zoo with another female cub born about the same time)
(6) Amara (F) - DOB 8/16/13 - Turtle Back Zoo - Deceased July 2019
(7-9) Thulani, Ime, and Bahati (M) - DOB 8/16/13 - Bronx Zoo

I believe their mother Sukari is still alive at Turtle Back Zoo in NJ, as she moved there with her daughter Amara when they opened their new lion exhibit.

Moxie had 1.2 cubs at Honolulu with SDZSP-born Enkundu on December 15th, 2012. The male cub, named Kaikane, moved to Cameron Park Zoo and sired a female cub of his own named Rey on October 5th, 2017. Kaikane's two sisters, Alohi and Iolana, were transferred to Zoo Leon in Mexico but I do not know if any cubs were born to either of the sisters.

Sahar passed away at Rolling Hills without siring any cubs while his littermates Asha and Kashifa both had cubs at Zoo Miami. Asha had a 1.0 K'wasi on December 15th, 2013 but sadly passed away shortly after. While Kashifa had 2.1 cubs on September 24th, 2013 but unfortunately the two males both passed away from health issues while the remaining female was sent up to Maryland Zoo to be raised with a litter of cubs that had been born there recently. The female Zuri is still there at Baltimore but has not produced any cubs of her own. Kashifa then went on to have another litter of 3.1 on March 6th, 2014. The three males were named Saba, Asani, Bantu, and Amirah. Kashifa also raised Kwasi along with these four since her sister Asha passed away. Asani and Bantu were sent to Lee Richardson Zoo and live together as a bachelor pair while Saba and their cousin K'wasi were sent to Lion Country Safari and sister Amirah remains at Miami. None of them have had any cubs of their own besides K'wasi who sired a litter of 1.1 at LCS on November 8th, 2019 named Atlas and Mara.

As noted earlier, Amali was not raised by Sukari and was instead sent down to Seneca Park Zoo to be raised with 1.1 cubs born a day after her. Amali and her adopted sister Savannah live together with a male named Siyanda at Louisville but no cubs have been born within this pride.

Obviously, M'wasi and Sukari's last litter of 3.1 has/did not produce any cubs of their own. I believe the female cub, Amara, had a breeding recommendation at Turtle Back with the male Demarcus but she passed away before having any cubs. Her 3 littermates/brothers are obviously still at Bronx and will probably never leave to have any cubs since they are already quite well represented in the population.

Thanks for this! Interesting to see just how one zoo's successful breeding pair can quickly become cemented across so many institutions.

Does anyone have an updated list of what animals are currently seen in the Asian Monorail ride?
This is the most updated list I could find on ZC, from this thread: Bronx Zoo Species List 6/21 [Bronx Zoo]

Bactrian Deer, Barasingha, Blackbuck, Chital, Indian Muntjac
Przewalski’s Horse
Burmese Brow-antlered Deer, Gaur
Siberian Tiger
Northern Sulawesi Babirusa
Asian Elephant
Indian Rhinoceros
Nilgai, Sambar
Tufted Deer
Bukharan Markhor, Himalayan Tahr
Red Panda

They should also have some Formosan Sika left if I’m not mistaken, though I do not know if they’re held bts.

They have a few Formosan Sika and a herd of Indian Hog Deer as in addition to the above. The sika, hog deer, and muntjac were all off-exhibit for most or all of the season last yard. I would assume the addition of new animals and separation for breeding are the reason.

They also routinely alternate between Amur and Malayan Tiger.

Popped into the zoo yesterday for about half the day so didn't see anything. Nevertheless, still noted some changes:

-The most notable change: World of Birds has been completely re-signed! No more paper print-outs, no more hanging cards. Brand new signs and signage boards have been installed all throughout the building. I did not get a chance to make it to the ABH to see if it's a similar situation there.
-A Snowy-Crowned Robin-Chat has been added to the collection and lives with the bee-eaters, bustard, and wood-doves.
-Sunbittern has been added to the South American rainforest walk-through.
-A female Temminck's Tragopan is present and signed in the former Kea habitat alongside the two female Lesser BOP (also now signed).
-All the zoo's cranes were off-exhibit and visible in the crane yards behind WoB. Not sure if this is Avian Flu related as all other birds were on-display.
-The Matschie's Tree-Kangaroo's pouch looked pretty enlarged to me. She wasn't at a good angle to see closer and I didn't see any movement but there was a large enough dump that the hole into the pouch was opened.
-CGF was closed, not sure why. I did see a family sneak in despite the gates being shut but I opted to not follow.
-La Palma Glass Frogs have gone on-exhibit in the poison dart frog terrarium in WoR. I didn't see them but I didn't spent too long trying today.
-Sunda Islands Pitviper have gone on-exhibit where the Ethiopian Mountain Adder was and that habitat has been completely redone. The adder has moved in with a second individual in a larger space along the main row of terrariums.
-A Radiated Tortoise hatchling was on-display.
-The single Cuban Crocodile remains the only animal in the crocodile row. The former alligator pool was still drained while the former Cuban pool was still filled but uninhabited.
-The Barbary Striped Grass Mice are indeed on-exhibit again. The Damaraland Mole-Rat habitat looks close to being completed. The last three habitats on the left side of the diurnal portion of the Mouse House were all closed for refurbishment. The giant sengi were moved to that far middle enclosure
-The former hairy armadillo and cloud rat habitats are both under refurbishment as well, with the former now being signed for cloud rats.
-Still no sign of Plum-Headed Parakeet, they might be gone now.
-The ruffed lemur habitat is closed for renovations.
-A fair bit of maintenance work was being conducted on the visitor side of Baboon Reserve and WoB.

I did not visit the giant tortoises, CGF (closed), ABH, Birds of Prey, or pelican pond.

Bronx Zoo will be getting a new Director of Animal Programs, Keith Lovett of the Buttonwood Park Zoo. He has done an incredible job at Buttonwood, and while I'm sad to see him go, I'm sure he'll do amazing at Bronx! He also this the Chair of the Anseriformes and New World Primates TAGs for the AZA, two groups of animals he drastically increased the collections of at Buttonwood, with various rare species of both. I'd expect him to do the same thing at Bronx, and that the zoo will see both of these groups become much more well-represented in the coming years. He also kept a lot of non-SSP and rarer species at Buttonwood, which means it'll be exciting to see what he is able to do given a bigger budget and world-known zoo.

Bronx has been bringing in some great new people lately. Their bird curator from Toledo has done an excellent job thus far and added quite a few cool and rarely seen species to the collection.

I am hoping the same holds true here. It's easy to forget that Bronx already has 30+ Anseriformes species, but New World primates are a group that has seen a drastic decrease in representation and exhibition at Bronx. Here's hoping he manages to change that and get some movement on new small monkey displays in due time.
