Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2023

Are there any notable species off exhibit due to the second floor closure? Specifically, I'm interested in the bee-eaters, maleo, tinamou, cock-of-the-rocks, and birds-of-paradise.

The bee-eaters, maleo, and birds-of-paradise should all be visible from floor 1, but I am not sure about the cock-of-the-rocks. In regards to the tinamou, I was under the impression they were phased out.

Cock-of-the-rocks are on the second floor.

Tinamou aren't on-exhibit on the first floor anymore.

It surprises me how much effort zoos put into this species, given it's neither endangered nor exotic. Frequently seems to get more attention than species more in need of it.

The post says the eggs were found abandoned in a nest box inside the Northern Ponds exhibit. I'm not sure if it was a planned breeding or if it's just what happened. That said, the pond only houses common native waterfowl atm (plus one lone male Chinese Merganser) so not sure there's much point in breeding really any of those species beyond demand.

Budgie Landing will open Memorial Day weekend. However the World of Birds 2nd floor still has no set reopening date.
In baby news there is a baby Bison now on display and according to a keeper a baby Nyala was born about a week ago (The baby Nyala wasn’t on display today.)
Also does anyone know of the zoo still has Kudu?

I saw the nyala when I visited, smallest one I've ever seen and I figured it couldn't have been more than a couple days old.

The zoo does still have kudu, yes.

Has there ever been success in breeding Myanmar Eld's deer or even an interest in doing so while the herd is behind-the-scenes?

Visited the zoo on Tuesday and thought I would share a few observations:

-The male and female okapi are on exhibit together
-The bald faced ibises and white-naped cranes appear to be nesting
-There are at least two baby bison and three baby gaur
-It appears two Bewick's(?) swans are in the Pere David's deer pond
-The two Mongolian wild horse foals born last year are both growing well
-World of Birds second floor still closed, looks like it will be for a while
-There is a baby mandrill in Congo Gorilla Forest
-The zoo previously announced the birth of babirusa piglets, but it was adult males Linus and Kenneth on exhibit
-The small arch-shaped enclosures along the side of the mouse house remain empty
-Budgies can be heard in Budgie Landing, which opens soon
-Aldabra tortoise pathway is closed with the "closed for cold weather" sign posted, though it is plenty warm for them to be out

The two swans are Whooper Swans.

Last few times I looked at those outdoor Mouse House exhibits, It looked like they had removed things like plants and climbing equipment but it might just be me
I think the Aldabra Tortoises will be out for Memorial Day weekend as that is many local zoos open warmer climate exhibits

According to the Zoo’s website, Members must pay $3 to get tickets for the Budgie Exhibit. I’m hoping this is just for the stick and not actual admission into the attraction. The member preview is free, unfortunately I won’t be able to go to the previews (May 25 and 26)
Hoping the $3 is just for the stick, like how Turtle Back Zoo allows for free admission to their aviary if you don’t want a stick.

The link you posted states that this is the admission ticket price, and that the ticket includes the feed stick.

Yeah I was hoping the wording might be a little weird but the more and more I read it I realize it will be admission. Hopefully this is temporary as the exhibit is new and popular. Though it could very well be permanent considering the food costs money.

Tbh, I wouldn't be mad if it's one of those things you pay for.

Tho I hope we get more interesting species soon as I know Big Jim has an interest in underrepresented animals

That is one thing I really live about the Butterfly Garden. The Birds, Koi, and Tortoises are all the more reason to visit the Garden!
