Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo News 2025

Are we gonna act like Bronx does not have a new exhibit opening this year? It’s not like robotic dinosaurs are the only thing happening. Plus with the Wildlife Conservation Society being highly dependent on federal grants, I would hope they are being frugal at this uncertain moment.
The reopening of World of Darkness is a wonderful occasion. A great achievement with living animals
this should not be an excuse for one to give up tbe desire to see a New York zoo , once again , exhibit orangutan -as the Bronx, Central Park and Staten Island in much I proved circumstances .
And one to abandon all hope of those who enter the Bronx Zoo of ever seeing permanent facility for elephants - which been part of the fabric of that institution for over 117 (The repurposed exhibit built in 1908) years and earlier

Zoos have been far more than just a menagerie of wild animals for longer than I have personally been alive. Many zoos, including Bronx, have a long history of rides, art installations, and temporary non-live animal attractions. Your own distaste for them, which is certainly not entirely misplaced, does not affect their effectiveness as a means to increase revenue in the slightest.

No one is saying they should replace all their live animals, but rather that animatronic versions of species that are impossible to source (non-avian Dinosauria), as a temporary, seasonal, exhibit, is a fantastic way to boost visitor numbers for a summer with minimal upkeep cost.

That being said, animatronic orangutans and elephants have definitely both been utilized at major zoological facilities in North America. Not standalone, but as one facet of a bigger picture.
Bread and circuses, bread and circuses..

In all due respect to the appeal of audio animatronic dinosaurs -AND Presidents (Love Disney World’s rendition of Franklin Pierce (!)) I would much prefer a permanent home for Orangutans or an elephant habitat in perpetuity .
I sympathize, but the dinosaurs are probably only there for the season. You/we have to think of them as "filler" until they have money abd resources to open another new exhibit. Even if an orangutan or elephant or rainforest exhibit were in the cards for that space for a year or two in the future, leaving it empty until then isn't necessary.

The individual who coined that phrase would have very much viewed any zoo, including Bronx, as a circus. Just a means of entertainment for the masses.
Blame Juvenal - not juvenile - for that one.
Love the zoo - irrespective

Few notes from a visit yesterday
-There is now a Baikal Teal in the last exhibit on the first floor of the World of Birds (with the Western Capercaillie and Harlequin Duck)
-The Chilean Flamingo pool was partly drained while the American Flamingos by the Aquatic Bird House were out
-There is work being done on the monorail station. Both the Gaur (seen from the Bronx River Parkway) and Markhor (seen from the Asia parking area) were out.
-All signage was removed for the Leopard in Jungleworld
-The turtles that were previously with the Philippine Sailfin Lizard in Jungleworld are now gone
-The Knobbed Hornbill exhibit in the World of Birds was blocked off with paper or cardboard
-The Masked Lapwing is now nesting in the Aquatic Bird House and half their exhibit is blocked off

Have the leopards now gone from jungle world? Apologies if this has been covered already, but I’ve not been active on zoo chat for the best part of a year and a lot of news has passed me by.
The previous occupant ( A singleton Amur leopard) is gone. Optimistically , it will be replaced by another species of leopard - hopefully a Clouded leopard which is more appropriate for an Oriental / Malay Archipelago themed exhibit than a Palearctic species.
If, not a smaller felid or small carnivore .

Did the Amur leopard die or were they sent to another collection? I think many in this forum always thought the enclosure was too small for a leopard.

I'm visiting for the first time this year on Saturday. Do you think some of the animals, Okapi, Giraffes, Gorillas, etc., will be outdoors? It's gonna be a high of 77 degrees.
