Bronx Zoo Bronx Zoo Species List 6/21

BIRDS OF PREY:
Bald Eagle
Snowy Owl (under renovation)
King Vulture
Golden Eagle
Andean Condor
Andean Condor
Southern White-faced Owl
Burrowing Owl
Cinereous Vulture

Pond past the aviaries:
Bar-headed Goose, Brown Pelican, Peruvian Pelican
-------------------------
The Birds of Prey Aviaries seemed average to above average. There was no problem with them and they seemed nice enough, but compared to the other exhibits at the zoo, it’s not as impressive. I may also be missing some from the pelican pond since I didn’t get to see it.

ZOO CENTER:
Southern White Rhinoceros
Black-headed Monitor, Spiny-tailed Monitor
Mary River Turtle, Mertens’s Water Monitor
Zebra Finch, Komodo Dragon
Blue-spotted Tree Monitor
Aldabra Giant Tortoise
-------------------------
I kind of rushed through Zoo Center, so there may be a couple things missing, but it should be mostly accurate.

That concludes my list. I hope this will be useful to someone and let me know if you have any questions and hopefully I or Thylo can answer them. :)

BUTTERFLY GARDEN:
Bananaquit, Barbary Dove, Cinnamon Teal, Crested Partridge, Double-barred Finch, Green-backed Twinspot, Red Avadavat, Red-billed Firefinch, Tambourine Dove, Red-footed Tortoise, Koi, Monarchs and a dozen other butterfly species
-------------------------
This was the only part of the zoo that I didn’t get to see, but thanks to @ThylacineAlive we have a list. The website says “well over a dozen species,” so I’m not sure exactly how many are in there.

I've only made an effort to ID the butterflies here twice: in 2015 and then in 2019. The species list remained more or less the same with a little variation in that time and combined I have noted 21 species on-exhibit there. The frustrating thing is they used to label the emerging butterflies viewable through that window which made for easy species ID but they don't seem to do that anymore.

-------------------------
I got to the Children’s Zoo right before the it closed and I was very surprised at how much there was. Definitely worth visiting if you have time.

There's a Striped Skunk on-exhibit near the rabbit pens. Also, the heavily vegetated area between the ASCO and anteater is actually an enclosure for Cape Barren Goose.

MADAGASCAR!:

Tsingy Cliffs:

Tsingy Caves:
Nile Crocodile, Damba Mipentina, Pinstripe Menarambo, Malawi Cichlids

Masoala:
Fossa
Red Ruffed-Lemur
Polleni Cichlid, Ptyochromis sp, “Tarantsy”
-------------------------
Madagascar! is another excellent building. I really loved that they recreated the natural spiny forest habitat of Ring-tailed Lemurs. I also liked that the vontsiras were so active for me, but the mouse lemurs were no-shows. :(

There are Sambava Tomato Frogs on-exhibit "Small Wonders" gallery.

AQUATIC BIRD HOUSE:

Laughing Kookaburra

Sulawesi Hornbill

Giant Wood-Rail, Roseate Spoonbill, Yellow-hooded Blackbird

Exterior Aviary:
Black-crowned Night-Heron, Lesser Adjutant
-------------------------
The Aquatic Bird House looks a bit like a downsized version of WoB; similarly furnished exhibits, just with more water. There’s a lot of rarities, as you can tell, some of which were no-shows for me.

The Grey-Necked Wood-Rail enclosure generally houses White-Throated Ground Dove as well.

There are West Indian Whistling-Duck in the Roseate Spoonbill aviary.

BIRDS OF PREY:
Bald Eagle
Snowy Owl (under renovation)
King Vulture
Golden Eagle
Andean Condor
Andean Condor
Southern White-faced Owl
Burrowing Owl
Cinereous Vulture

There should be Wild Swan Geese in the pelican pond as well.

ZOO CENTER:
Southern White Rhinoceros
Black-headed Monitor, Spiny-tailed Monitor
Mary River Turtle, Mertens’s Water Monitor
Zebra Finch, Komodo Dragon
Blue-spotted Tree Monitor
Aldabra Giant Tortoise
-------------------------

Only correction here is the Black-Headed Monitor died and currently a bearded dragon shares the enclosure with the Spiny-Tailed Monitor (ssp. brachyurus).

One that I missed from last night is that the CGF aviary also houses Guinea Turaco.

Other than a few corrections and easy misses/losses, you've done a fantastic job! Kudos to you for taking on such a massive project and doing so well with it. A little unfortunate that the list will probably be very different within a few months

-------------------------
Wild Asia is a close second for me behind Africa for the best exhibits at the zoo. The hoofstock yards at the monorail are vast and the whole area covers about 40 acres, IIRC. And, of course, I can't forget about the famous JungleWorld. It's the second best indoor rainforest in the US, IMO, just behind Lied Jungle, which is larger. The thing that sets it apart from the others is the geographic theming.

Does anyone know if the Pygmy Slow Loris has returned?
