Thank you for sharing this. Chicago is likely my next zoo destination, and it's been difficult to figure out where at Brookfield various species are given that there wasn't an up-to-date species list on ZooChat and ZTL is next to useless for this kind of thing. Based on this list, it appears that Brookfield no longer has flying snakes? If so, that's a real shame as it is one of the herps I was hopeful to see. Based on this list, would you agree with my assessment that Feathers and Scales should be a higher priority than Reptiles and Birds? Also good to know that there isn't really anything worth seeing in the "Wild Encounters" area.

I decided to add up all the species that you listed in your excellent post. I ended up with a grand total of 388 species, and for each part of Brookfield Zoo I only counted the different species as of course there's a little repetition within certain buildings. However, overall there's still a few birds that are found across the zoo in various zones, so my best estimate is that Brookfield Zoo has 380 different species.

The Swamp (54), Feathers and Scales (54), Reptiles and Birds (47) and The Living Coast (70) account for approximately 60% of all the species in the zoo.

Date of visit: July 5 2024

Desert's Edge - 9 species

Big Cats - 5 species

Clouded Leopard Rain Forest - 10 species

Sea Lion Cove - 2 species

Seven Seas - 1 species

Hamill Family Wild Encounters - 6 species (including domestics)

Hamill Family Play Zoo - 18 species

The Swamp - 54 species

Tropic World - 10 species (South America) & 5 species (Asia) & 8 species (Africa)

Feathers and Scales - 54 species

Formal Pool - 2 species

Hamill Family Nature Plaza - 13 species

Reptiles and Birds - 47 species

The Living Coast - 70 species (excluding corals/anemones)

Great Bear Wilderness - 5 species

Habitat Africa! The Savanna - 18 species

Habitat Africa! The Forest - 11 species

Australia - 11 species

Pachyderms - 5 species

Hoofed Animals - 3 species

Butterflies! - 16 species

Forest Preserve - 3 species

Free-roaming - 2 species

TOTAL: 388 species (although there's a few birds found in multiple areas)

I would definitely prioritize Feathers and Scales over Reptiles and Birds, as the former has a larger collection and more interesting exhibitry.
