Children's Zoo Closing
As Brookfield Zoo prepares for yet another exciting new attraction, Children’s Zoo will permanently close starting in January 2013. The concept development and design of this new exhibit are currently in process so stay tuned as details become finalized. Make plans to come out and visit this family favorite before the end of the year. Also, mark your calendar for Spring 2013 when Dinosaurs Alive! returns—now including new feathered species!

I am not so sad to see this the Children's Zoo go as it is getting very old and outdated (plus we already had the Hamill Family Play Zoo).

I came across a pdf file about the future exhibit that will replace the Children's Zoo. The following is a summary.

The following information is what's being proposed/finalized for the new exhibit. Demolition begins on the Children's Zoo this January, and the new exhibit is tentatively set to open March of 2015. Main features include an encounter area, budgie aviary, new wildlife exhibit complex, program animal holding building, animal and guest photo kiosk. This new exhibit will be connected to the Hamil Family Play Zoo, and will continue the kid friendly theme. It will be an estimated 6.5 million dollar exhibit.

The Encounter Area-will include petting and feed yards, a proposed wallaby/emu walk-through exhibit, and this section will also include the Animal Holding Building that I will describe later. The proposed animals for the Encounter Area are Reindeer, Goats, Llamas, Alpacas, Bennett Wallaby.

Budgie Aviary- Guests will be able to feed budgies by purchasing feed sticks. The aviary will hold up to 900 budgies.

New Wildlife Complex-will be home to wildlife species that will allow the exhibits to be open throughout the year. Proposed animals are Badger, Fisher, European Lynx, Wolverine, Red Panda, Bald Eagle.

Program Animal Holding Building-The Zoo will launch a new program that incorporates specially selected hand reared animals for guest encounters, on and off grounds special events around Chicago. It will consist of animal holding areas, a nursery viewing area for guests, and a number of outdoor holding yards for large and medium sized animals. In addition there will be a large multipurpose room in the building for special events, birthday parties, and events throughout the year where program animals will be presented to guests. Proposed animals- Caracal, Genet, Civet, Binturong, Fennec Fox, Tamarin or Marmoset, Ferret, Australian Budgie, Emu, Macaws, Parrots, Red-tailed Hawk, Harris Hawk, Turkey Vulture, Bateleur Eagle, Kestrel, Andean Condor, Pythons, Boas, Rat Snake, Blue Tongue Skink, Monitor Lizard.

Animal and guest photo kiosk. Guests will be able to have their picture taken with animals such as macaws, parrots, small mammals, reptiles, and reindeer during the winter.

@tropicworld

I'm not sure why the map says sloth bears. I can only remember Andean Bears being exhibited there.

Hello Brookfield zoo do i have a updated for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are male Amur tiger cub Max arrived at you zoo and is going to breed with the female Whirl who just got back from Minnesota zoo.

Brookfield Zoo 2012 a year in review. I tried to compile a list of happenings from around the zoo in the last year. I'm sure I'm missing a few things.

Australia- New fencing was added to all the outdoor exhibits. They allow guests to get closer, unobstructed views of kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and cassowary. Babies included a baby wombat, and two kangaroo joeys.

The Fragile Desert- The zoo now exhibits damaraland mole rat and naked role rats. Babies- black-footed cat.

Great Bear Wilderness- A mexican gray wolf was sent to New Mexico to be released in the wild.Babies- Bison

Habitat Africa! The Savannah – Babies included Dwarf Mongoose, Giraffe, African Wild Dogs, and aardvark.

Hamil Family Play Zoo- new animals tiny hairy screaming armadillos, along with a new nine-banded armadillo.

Pachyderm House- the zoo no longer exhibits hippopotamus, instead they converted their old exhibit to accommodate pygmy hippos. A pygmy hippo, and brazilian tapir where moved from tropic world to this exhibit.
This exhibit now has 2 pygmy hippos, 2 brazillian tapir, and 3 black rhinos.

Tropic World-
South America- no longer has a tapir.
Africa- no longer has a pygmy hippo. Welcomed a new silver-back gorilla JoJo from lincoln park zoo. New additions included schmidt’s guenon, angolan colobus monkeys.

The Swamp- New additions included orinoco crocodile, amazon tree boa, red piranha, black and white tegu, false water cobra, amazon milk frogs, matamata, cope's false chameleon, galliwasp, hatian giant anole.

Reptiles and Birds- formerly the perching bird house. This exhibit continues to be slowly renovated.

The Children's Zoo- has officially closed for good. A brand new exhibit will be replacing it.

The old Reptile House- is being renovated into the zoo's Conservation Center. Given the buildings historic nature the zoo is converting it into classrooms and offices to deal with the zoo's many conservation projects. It will open in 2013.

Dinosaurs Alive- a temporary exhibit will be at the zoo staring in spring of 2013.
