Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2015

The zoo seems to be catching more heat for the Stingrays than it got noticed for opening Wild Encounters. What a shame.

Some notes from my visit today:

- The warthogs were nowhere to be seen (are they still there?). The exhibit that had signage for them had three waterbuck.
- Keeper I talked to said there are now 2 species of bat on display; I couldn't tell in the dark, but they all looked like the same species to me (Rodriguez).
- They are trying to breed 7 year-old male echidna with 20 year-old female; not going well so far, as female as not interested in socializing. They also have a much older female echidna, who will turn 47 this year.
- Wolf cubs were on display, and drew quite the crowd! They were active on their rock while their mother watched them from a little ways off.
- Construction on the north end of Feathers & Scales is still ongoing.
- Not sure if these have been reported yet, but the zoo has had a few births in the last couple of months besides the zebra and dolphin: a gorilla, an Angolan colobus, twin binturongs, twin rock hyraxes, and a Moholi Bushbaby,
- As of August 2015, Baboon Island remains standing, albeit uninhabited.

Yes, they are still there. Saw the zoo's two warthogs a couple weekends ago.

When was the baby gorilla born, unless if you are talking about Nora (born in Nov 2013)? I know that Nora's older sister Kamba is pregnant but didn't know of the time frame that she could give birth.

I can't find anything about a recent gorilla birth, so I guess it was Nora. The one I saw was small enough to fit tightly in her mother's arms, I didn't know they were still that small at close to 2 years so I thought it was an infant.

Anyone else think it's strange that Ramar is still being kept right across from JoJo and the other gorillas? I wonder why they didn't move him to a bachelor group somewhere.

I think he is too old to travel, but he is fine on his own.

A few notes from today's visit:
- Multiple employees at the zoo confirmed that elephants are indeed slated to come back to the zoo. They said it will probably be a number of years but there is land on the property that would be used for the new exhibit instead of knocking anything down. However, Nile hippos are not slated to come back as the zoo is focusing on pygmy hippo breeding.
- The zoo is interested in breeding black rhinos.
- I was told the plan is to build a macaque exhibit on the site of the demolished Baboon Island.
- The keepers are really pushing to make outdoor exhibits for the gorillas and orangutans.
