Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2017

A while back I mentioned the birth of bat-eared fox kits. Unfortunately they have since passed away.

Zeus, an adolescent male sea lion, has arrived from Oceans of Fun and can be seen in the first pool across from Clouded Leopard Rain Forest building with our other adolescent male sea lion, Kanuk.

The male Grevy's zebra foal born last fall has been named Huru.

Our new male red panda from Kansas, Fei-Jai, is now on exhibit, however I have yet to see him.

Lowland tapirs are returning to Brookfield Zoo, supposedly we are getting a breeding pair.

Giraffe feedings will be starting Memorial Day weekend.

Ato, a young male giraffe from the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, has arrived on a breeding recommendation.

Why? There are almost no lowland tapirs left in North America, and there isn't enough space to hold a population long-term.

Once again thank you for the updates. Will giraffe feedings go through all of summer as a seasonal event? Or will it be an annual thing that happends every summer? And where will this take place?

The return of Lowland tapirs is an interesting development. On the one hand the zoo could have just been scrambling to find a replacement for our elderly barid's female, but if so, why not bring in a breeding pair of barid's tapir, or even Malayin? While its exciting that the zoo is getting an extremely rare species of my favorite animal (Hence my name) its a bit confusing on why this species was the choice.

Also, does anyone know when the pygmy loris will go on exhibit? I expected them to be out by now.

Very interesting development. Do you know where they will be coming from?

I don't unfortunately.

Not sure why. We do have enough room for them at Brookfield though.

Most likely seasonal. It will be taking place on the left side of the outdoor exhibit, across from the hoofed mammals.

Interesting to see the return of a familiar species. Didn't realize they'd been so phased-out elsewhere. The fact they would be a breeding pair is even more surprising. I'm glad Brookfield isn't letting it's non-African pachyderm collection merely die out though.

Update: The lowland tapirs coming to Brookfield are not on a SSP breeding recommendation.

Young male giraffe Ato has completed quarantine and is being introduced to the giraffe herd.

Male pangolin David will be on exhibit sometime in mid-May.

A second reindeer fawn was born on April 21st to mother Crystal.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't think that any pangolins would come out until July at the earliest, BUT MAY! I could not be happier right now.

Of course the tapirs, reindeer and giraffe news are great as well, and I will finally be able to make down to the zoo next week for a few hours to see these new additions.

Do you happen to know when the pygmy loris' will go on exhibit?

@MeiLover Do you know how many pangolins the zoo's up to now? Are they all behind the scenes in Fragile Rainforest

Don't know how many total Brookfield has. Can't remember if they are either behind the scenes in Clouded Leopard Rain Forest or Habitat Africa: The Forest.
