Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2017

Yeah, the new Gateways magazine had a nice but short article introducing the arrival of the Pangolians and advertising it as the start of the program. It also mentioned the upcoming lorises.

New male red panda Fei Jai has unfortunately passed away.

Aussie and Nan are now spending time together.

What a shame, what's going on with male red pandas at Brookfield?

Why are the 2 being introduced? Aussie's past breeding age and as far as I know things are going well between Nan and Hudsons

at least these little guys are finally out, can't wait to see them.

No idea, it was a complete shock to me. I've gotten in contact with a bear keeper friend of mine and am awaiting a response from her.

It reveals the full list of zoos with pangolins:
Brookfield, Columbus, Gladys Porter, Memphis, Pittsburgh, and Turtle Back. I expect the rest of the institutions will make their announcements today.

Pittsburgh made their announcement yesterday. I already knew that one and Gladys Porter. Columbus and Memphis are not surprising, I had already suspected them (especially Memphis with its large nocturnal house). Turtle Back, on the other hand... did not see that one coming.

I knew all but Memphis (which does not use ZIMS). I have rough population data from several months since November (when most zoos received pangolins), but I do not know when Gladys Porter or Memphis received them. I actually suspected the National Zoo (or SCBI) to get some, because of recent research in SCBI, but that did not happen.

I also knew all but Memphis, and yes, Turtle Back was a major shock. I was thinking San Diego would receive some with their previous experience with them, and their lone specimen passing away last year. I will be going to the zoo hopefully on Sunday, so expect photos of the exhibit and David the pangolin then.

I made a visited to Brookfield today. I made sure to visit the pangolion exhibit, but it was curled up inside a log-like item, and could only seem some scales, and due to the lighting, I wouldn't call it a photo worthy of the gallery.

I also tried to sight the pygmy loris, but it was so dark and so difficult to see in the exhibit that I don't feel like qualifying seeing a shape is viewing the animal.

We ran out of time to visit Dinos & Dragons, but hoping to see it before summer ends. I'm a sucker for Komodos.

Updates from today's zoo visit:

I uploaded a photo of the pangolin exhibit to the gallery. Sadly he was asleep in the log similar to JMV's visit, but it was still cool to see his scales and tail.

I did see the pygmy Loris' actually a pretty good view of them in fact but I was unable to get a good picture. I did still about a photo of their exhibit. Something interesting I notice is that mom and baby were in the main exhibit but there was some sort of tunnel near the back of the exhibit they look like a 3rd Loris was in.

Giraffe feeding deck is complete and feeding should start tomorrow if I'm correct. I upload a photo to the gallery.

The new Penguin encounter is now open. Booking is now open for those interested in the encounter. Photos uploaded to the gallery

The royal antelope that was at the zoo previously is expected to go back on exhibit when the red-flanked duikers moved to their Summer exhibit.

Lastly a male okapi calf was born :).

Last I checked, penguins didn't have scales ;):p

A major trip of mine just got postponed :P do tell us when this happens!

I witnessed a Giraffe feeding during my visit on Thursday - I forgot to report it given how tired I was. I remember turning to my friend to express my disbelief it was already completed!

Did Esmeralda pass away at some point? Also have they started doing anything to the old monkey rock yet?
