Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2022

Do you guys think the zoo will acquire a new Silverback or wait until Zachary is old enough to leave the troop?

They do plan too, although i'd probably wait until Zachary (and Ali) are a little older.

Although they're not at a young, vulnerable age, it'd still be best to wait before moving the young males (probably to a bachelor facility together), and then acquiring a new silverback. This could be in another two to three years time (at the earliest).

Koola and Kamba are still young, so could afford to wait a few years or so. It'd also be beneficial to wait a little longer until Nora (who's nine) is at the age to breed too.

Koola and Kamba aren’t that young (Koola is 27 and Kamba is almost 18), and have been around multiple silverbacks.

Kamba's arguably still a young female; she's still got around two decades of reproductivity ahead of her.

The entire Tropic World building is closed today. Not sure how long the closure will last.

Zach is already seven years old, he is old enough to move to a bachelor troop, probably it's already planned. Ali is four, she is not a threat to a new silverback, especially an older one.

I guess you could move Zachary now if they wished; but most moves aren't made until the males are at least around nine or ten years old. Zachary could still live with the troop if Brookfield wishes, but if they're willing to send him elsewhere and import a new silverback now, than it could be done.

SSP likes to keep the males in their natal troop as long as possible, because they become better silverbacks. However, the last moves were the opposite.
Oliver -> 6yo
Enzi -> 7,5yo
Ubuntu -> 7yo
Leom -> 6yo
TJ -> 7yo

Jojo wasn't pretty tolerant with blackbacks, so I think this move is already planned.

Update to this: Tropic World will only be open on weekends for the time being due to maintenance.

Also, while I was at the zoo today, I did not see the baby nyala at all. I worry the baby could have passed. Waiting for the zoo to confirm this to me.

Some info about Tropic World/the future of primates was included in a recent posting on the AZA job board:

"The Brookfield Zoo is in the process of reimagining our Primate Department and we are looking for a person to help lead that effort. We are currently in the design phase for a series of new, state of the art outdoor exhibits for gorillas, orangutans, and South American primates. The project also includes a new gorilla holding facility that will accommodate both a family and a bachelor group. The successful candidate for this position will be involved the development of the project as well as the repurposing of the current exhibits. The new facilities will provide an opportunity for collection development."

Yes, I posted about that recently.

Glad to see some more insight into these changes, especially the affirmation of multiple gorilla holdings and outdoor areas for South American primates as well. I'm glad that this looks to be a serious re-development and not more of a casual expansion. I hope their ambition widens.
