Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2022

Combine this Baboon Island, Desert's Edge and the Aardvark House into a new complex in the safari removation for smaller African species not covered by the kopje building. Keep all species, of course.

Former Desert's Edge can become an extension of Clouded Leopard Rainforest :)

What new species would they add to the Clouded Leopard Rainforest?

I found out today that Ngala, the alpha female of the African painted dog pack, passed away at some point over the past couple months or so due to injuries from fights within the pack. The whole pack is currently still together despite ongoing fights. At least two members of the pack have limps and one of them has a badly cut-up nose. Hoping staff works on splitting them up soon. It’s clear they no longer get along.

Hope the polar bear is still denned up but has not given birth. She has a 3-week window left to give birth and then after that, it’s highly unlikely. Staff aren’t that hopeful but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Does anyone know if the exhibit for the elephant shrew in Habitat Africa: The Forest is still vacant or if there is a different species being exhibited there at the moment? I know the shrew is not on display any longer for some reason.

There’s currently a pair of Home’s hingeback tortoises in the exhibit.

While we’re on the subject of elephant shrews. I am a bit curious as of how many individuals were kept at Brookfield in total, mainly by the time they were initially phased out; in addition to their names and dates of birth.

They just had 1.0 that was sent to Bronx earlier this year. They had breed Elephant Shrews in the past but lately only Omaha has as the population has dwindled to under 10 individuals now.

Sad. I really enjoyed watching him run around his enclosure and searching for food. A really interesting species.
I had the pleasure of watching him while waiting for the keeper to feed the pangolin. In hindsight, that was quite fortunate as it was just a little while before he'd be gone, and I managed a halfway decent photo of him.
