Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo news 2025

Today's visit

The Swamp

-Not much to report here, but I did have a funny encounter with the flamingos, when a group of them got spooked by a little hornbill who was just minding his own business.

Clouded Leopard Rainforest

-
About a year ago, I remember a reply from the zoo to a comment on one of their posts saying they had only two clouded leopards and they were both male. It would seem now that they now have a female in their collection due to a sign I saw.

-The Bintlet (binturong baby) was adorable, they were following mom, while I'm assuming dad was keeping watch.

Deserts Edge

-
Something must have happened with the bat eared foxes, because they now have a sign that says sensitive animal area. I wonder if there is a secret birth or if something happened to them

-I actually saw the Genet being active for once, it looked surprised to see me as I was it.

Miscellaneous

-I'm a little bit embarassed to admit, but I went down a path I usually don't take and am now just learning that the zoo has an exhibit for storks

-At the living coast it looked like some penguins were recovering from some sort of injury as they have feathers missing (not molting as you could see their skin

-The Wombat situation is still up in the air as Mia was still MIA. I could not find a keeper, so I couldn't get a clear answer, but it was dark and it appeared the exhibit had been cleaned out

This is how I learned there was a stork exhibit.

If I remember correctly, there used to be Saddle-billed Storks in the exhibit next to the White Storks. This goes back probably about a decade ago.

Yeah, fwiw to anyone else, the stork exhibit and additional okapi exhibit are on the path between Salt Creek Wilderness/Nature Trail/Indian Lake/Swan Lake/my god how many names does it have, and the rest of the zoo, between Hoofstock Yards to the north and Great Bear Wilderness to the south.

What does the future hold for breeding new cetacean offspring at the zoo? Allie has had a poor breeding record and I don't know why the zoo would choose her as the new mother (unless it was accidental). Most of the other females in the exhibit also have a poor breeding record.

It's iffy at best. Topeka's likely too old to breed now. Her two daughters (Spree and Allison) both had calves in 2014, but both failed to raise the calves and they subsequently passed. The best option for those two would've likely been to witness Allie raising this youngster.

The best option aside from Allie would likely be Noelani who also birthed in 2014, but also lost her calf in infancy. Although from all reports - she at least made the attempt to raise it.

Spree is not Tapeko’s daughter. Spree, Noelani, and Allison have witnessed the raising of youngsters before, when Tapeko had Merlin and Spree had Magic in 2013, and Allie had Maxine in 2014.

However it's worth noting that they haven't witnessed the raising of a calf in a while now - and both Spree and Allison failed to raise their calves even after witnessing the raising of the two calves the year before.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see where Brookfield go from here. Giving Allie another chance, but I will be interested to see whether they give some of the other younger females another chance.

This is a random question, and it has been some time since I visited it, but are there any plans for Dragonfly Marsh in the Master Plan? When I decided to take a trip over last year, I was surprised to see it seemed virtually untouched and most of the murals and walls succumbed to sun damage and peeling. I have this photo from that time:

The master plan shows the planned elephant exhibit stretching around the dragonfly marsh with the existing boardwalk maintained. It's in such a remote part of the zoo and incredibly easy to miss (I myself haven't seen it in years) so there probably hasn't been much motivation to revitalize it.
