Is Budapest Zoo worth a visit? Does it have some historical importance?
Yes, Budapest zoo is really worth a visit. Both zoo nerds and casual public will enjoy it.

It has some nice historical buildings - influenced by old Hungarian traditional style, by Viennese urban 19th century style or early Hagenbeck. The whole zoo areal is well cared for, they have good gardeners. The zoo collection of almost 900 species is among TOP10 in Europe. Their annual attendance is 1.1 million.

Without a doubt yes. It has some beautiful old buildings in Secession archictecture, the most important being the entrance building and the elephant house.

The absolute stars are both artificial Little and Great Rock that dominate the central part of the zoo. A number of paths lead over and around these rocks, past enclosures for ungulates and predators.
Inside the Great Rock is Magic Hill, a large interactive museum about evolution, species diversity and the relationship between humans and nature.

However, most of the enclosures are only mediocre; this zoo has to rely mainly on its landscaping, (17 accessible) buildings and its large and broad collection. The latter one is particulary strong in Australian faune.

Visited last week for the first time. Was impressed with the big rock. Got lost in their took me a long time to find the way out. New bio dome their building reminded me of the Eden project. Their was a sign up saying a new female lion had just arrived.
That sign is there from 2023.
