They did, although in some zoo-fan circles there is a debate if Budapest should have acquired the species. There is no knowledge about the size of the wild population, although it is assumed they are rare. There is no knowledge on the husbandry and there is no EEP or ESB for the species. There has been an import of the species into Europe, but not everybody is happy about it and I'm not sure if Budapest should have gotten this species.
 
There has never been a legal export of earless monitors out of Borneo.... And even then they are popping up around the world and apparently they have already bred in a Japanese reptile zoo...

How do you mean Lintworm, as the species has no CITES status and the EU is still allowing wild-caught reptiles to come in? Are Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia prohibiting the export?
 
ergh, I wish I had read vogelcommando's link on the previous page about the illegal trade in the species! I feel like I have violated my own morals with my prior post :(

in the report it says that in all three countries which make up Borneo the species is strictly protected and commercial trade in it is illegal. Hence, if true, all individuals which have come out of the island have been smuggled out.

(In my defence, I did see the link, I just didn't open it :p)

And even if the species is protected, I wouldn't be surprised to see ear-less monitors with export documents from Indonesia.

And A LOT of invertebrates species, including many stick insects, cockroaches and bird-eatings spiders. Also freshwater crabs, mantis shrimps, moon jellyfish, upside-down jellyfish...
 
That's what I love about Budapest Zoo - animals around every corner! I thought Magic Mountain was excellent during my visit last year!

How are the Koalas doing??
 
Does anyone have an update on earless monitor lizards (Lanthanotus borneensis) in Budapest? Are they doing well? Still behind the scenes?
