Buffalo Zoo Buffalo Zoo 2011

I forgot to mention that one of the elephants still had shackles on two of their ankles. I find it ridiculous after all this time they are still being used. But then again, I'll never know the reason behind them.
 
I was looking on the zoo's facebook page today and noticed that a local company donated $250,000 for the bear necessities. Whether that be for the bears now or to go towards the new Arctic exhibit, it's a nice start.

Also on a positive note, my gray necked wood rail photo that placed second in the photo contest (bird category) is featured in the zoo's 2012 calendar. It's an honor to be chosen knowing that the zoo uses photo submissions from the past few years and not necessarily just from this year!
 
I'm currently not at my home, but this is what I remember from the newsletter:

* A type of ray or stinray is being added to the Rainforest exhibit.
* Clover, the Indian rhino is finally being moved to African Lion Safari.
* A new female tiger is going to be on display with the other two female tigers (I'm not sure why they didn't get a breeding male, but maybe SSP doesn't want to zoo to breed at the moment).
* A new male will join the Rocky Mountain Big Horned Sheep (I'm not sure if this means they are replacing the dominant male or now will have two).
 
After rereading the article, the Buffalo Zoo is bringing in river rays. I'm curious how they will coexist with the caiman, turtles, and capybara. I also forgot to mention the zoo is getting a male Indian rhino from the Bronx Zoo to mate with the adult female rhino.

On an other note, I just watched two videos on facebook and both Maryland and Buffalo Zoo claim to be the third oldest in the U.S. Which one do you this is actually the third oldest one?
 
Neither - technically Philly, Central Park, Lincoln Park, and Roger Williams all have beginnings before 1875 when Buffalo, Ross Park, and Cincinnati opened.

It did not say, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a press release when he makes his debut at the zoo. Maybe someone familiar with the Bronx Zoo would know.

I don't think it would absolutely be a bad thing to move Anana to another zoo. Although she's quite compatible with Nanuq, a more enriching environment might be something she needs in order to reproduce. It doesn't seem like they would break ground on the exhibit until 2013. With new polar bear exhibits that have recently opened around the country, is it that bad to send them somewhere else? Most likely they would have to during construction anyway.

Out of all of the replies, this ignorant comment made me roll my eyes the most:

"The problem I have with this story isn't that we are spending money on the zoo, which I feel is a worthwile project to support. Warren, you bring up an interesting point when asking why we spend money on bears as opposed to those going through tough economical times. I personally have no problem with putting money into the zoo, but it seems to me that $18 million for one exhibit is absurd. When most of the exhibit consists of an open space with a swimming area, what is the money going to? A person could build a mansion for $5 million and that would have more ammenities than any person could ask for. These bears are going to have to wipe their feet anytime they want to go inside (I would say they would have to take their shoes off, but even with their shoes on, they still have bear feet!)."
 
I was thinking about this before going to sleep last night. I really need to see the layout of this exhibit. They want to move the entrance so the Arctic exhibit has more space. Okay, that's going to give them a little extra room, but the elephant exhibit is still right behind them. And with this new exhibit, I wonder if it will cause a dead end when you see the elephants and have to back track to continue on in the zoo. They could expand forward if they removed the American Pavilion cages and what I like to call the Island of Misfit Petting Zoo Animals.

I have often wondered the same thing about the space used for the new polar bear exhibit and think that your ideas are much better than what they are looking to do.

I looked at the map today and thought they could drag into some more space if they got rid of the train in the front. However, it sort of be an awkward shaped exhibit and I'm not sure how they realign the pathways to make it continuous with the rest of the zoo. It be interesting to see if people changed their minds and we're willing to donate money is Anana ended up giving birth this winter. We shall see.
