Buffalo Zoo Buffalo Zoo News 2013

Her zookeepers nicknamed her that but the zoo decided to do an official name contest.

If anyone is interested, the two ocelots have mated this month. I saw a series of photos catching the act on flickr.

Yes! Thank you for this update! It is great to know that Alya has finally bred, and her mother was one of the most genetically important Brazilian Ocelots in the country. Alya was also the first wildcat to be born via oviductal artificial insemination, so it is great that she might just have cubs of her own!

as per facebook: Voting for the cub's name is now closed and the votes have been tallied. With a whopping 82% of the votes, you told us that we should make her nickname permanent. Her official name is Luna! Thank you everyone who participated. Luna has moved from the exotic domestic animals exhibit to the vanishing animals north exhibit near the reptile house. She'll be on exhibit there from 11:30 - 12:30 every day.

This was my first time visitng this zoo and I enjoyed it. Couple updates. A Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep gave a live birth at 1030 am yesterday morning and The Meerkats were off exhibit.

No, they had a litter trio -- Kahn, Kehller, Seigel (stage names). Asani came a couple years ago and then the zoo will get the two lionesses from the Smithsonian National Zoo at the end of the month.

I forgot to mention I read in the zoo's magazine that they plan to replace the lorikeets with kookaburra, since they are a sturdier bird that can be exhibited year round. Their aviary will be by the new entrance.

The Buffalo Zoos polar bear cubs Luna and Kali were featured tonight on NBC nightly news.Buffalo Zoo director Donna Fernandes once again stated that these bears are only going to be at the Buffalo Zoo temporarily and they are hopeful for them to help drive its new exhibit fundraising.

Although this video clip she only really mentioned Kali leaving and no word about Luna.

In other news, I asked about the zoo about the number of their lions. There used to be the trio siblings - 1.2, then a male was added, then the two lionesses from Smithsonian National Zoo came along. I imagined the original trio siblings relocated, but apparently the zoo has all six of them. I have no idea how they have enough holding space and I imagine they will be rotating. No mention if any would relocate, but I kind of hope they eventually do.

Rare Southern Tamandua Born at Buffalo Zoo

A group of Southern Tamanduas was imported to the United States last August as part of an effort to bolster the population in US zoos. A pair named Olive and Brutus were placed at the Buffalo Zoo.

Not much is known about the reproductive behaviors of this species, but Olive and Brutus had their first pup on April 7. The male baby, named Otis, is strong, alert and very vocal.

Zoo keepers report that Olive is a very attentive mother and though she is protective of her baby, she is calm around her keepers. Every morning, the baby can be seen clinging onto his mom’s back as she makes her way down to the feeding pans for her breakfast. He has no problem letting mom know when she is not by his side!

Southern Tamanduas are native to much of South America, but they are becoming rare. These ant- and termite-eating mammals are expert diggers, and are able to extract insects with their long tongues.
