On February 2nd, the zoo announced that they have humanely euthanized their female African lion named Acacia due to deteriorating health conditions with her liver and spleen. She was 18 years old.

An Indian rhinoceros calf is due this Fall:

The zoo announced that unlike Mohan's birth which was the result of artificial insemination, the zoo says George another one-horned rhino is the father.

The zoo says this is Tashi's fifth calf and George's first.

Tashi's due date is Fall 2021.
Great news! Also male George is now 12+ and a better match for the seasoned older cow.

The remaining reindeer are no longer at the zoo and their exhibit is being renovated for at least two new animals. From what I have heard, it's two similar species from China that can share the exhibit space. Also, taller poles are being put around the exhibit as barriers. That's all the hints a zoo worker would provide visitors. Any guesses here what they may be?

I would bet $10 its takin and goral. Two similar animals from China who are replacing another hoofstock. Makes all too much sense.

Could be Pere David's Deer as one of the species? Although I would think a Takin mix would be more likely. Goral would be interesting as the populations been reducing despite institutional interest due to poor breeding success. So I am unsure if their are animals out there for a new zoo to take on tbh.

How big is the exhibit?

How big is the exhibit?

Approximately 13,000 sq feet from a quick estimate I did on google earth. I provided an image of the exhibit provided below.

I could see takin/goral working in that exhibit then. I'd also see a deer species work, although I don't know if two deer species could be mixed in one habitat without a hybridization risk. Hopefully this exhibit is done by the time I visit in July.

Man I hope it is Takin, I would geek out to have one of my favorite animals come to my hometown zoo.

I'm visiting this zoo soon for the first time. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? I will be there for approximately 2 hours.

It turned out to be tufted deer and brown Chinese geese. o_O

EDIT: I'm rereading my previous post of the hint of two similar species. Maybe the geese are just an add in and another type of deer will share the space with tufted deer?

Do you know if they are on exhibit yet? I was thinking of going this week, if they are on view I will definitely go and post an update.
