Burgers' Zoo Burgers Zoo 2016

As I regularly go to Burgers' zoo I am able to provide a complete set
of photo's of every enclosure, terrarium or aviary row including species lists,
posted in the gallery of Burgers' Zoo. If people are interested I am willing to do so, but if no one is, I would rather not take the effort. ;)

So is anyone interested?

I'm very interested in certain species :D

Even though I go there myself a few times a year, filling up the gallery is always encouraged. ;)

Chimp group:
A) true PTVerus: Giambo (M) + Mama, Marlene (Givskud), Jimmie, Gaby, Geisha, Roosje, and Raimee (FF).
B) unsure PT: Fons (M) and Tesua + Tushi (FF).
C) hybrid PT: Jing and Ghineau (MM) + Moniek, Morami, Erika (Givskud) and Monika/Moni (Veszprem) (FF).

Geisha is still there? I thought she was going to be transferred in 2010/11?

And a shame about Tepel :( she at the very least was one I could tell apart (can only identify the males, Roos, Jimmie, Gaby, Tushi and Raimee)

You should be able to identify the male 'Giambo'- he has a distinctive silvered coat unlike any other Chimp I've seen. Who is his mother(and suspected father)?

If you've read 'Chimpanzee Politics' by Frans de Waal you'll know this colony was made famous by his study- a few of the original characters from the book are still there- Mama, Jimmie(from memory- a female), Moniek, Roosje, Fonz, -Tepel was another of the originally formed group. In those days there was no identification of their races though.

No no I know haha, I can identify all four of the males, plus Mama, Jimmie, Roos, Tushi, Raimee and Gaby. And I meant visually :)

I believe Giambo's parents are Gorilla (mother of Gaby and Geisha and foster mother of Roos) and Tarzan (father of Morami). It hasn't actually been confirmed if Giambo himself is the father of anyone in the group.

My bad, I misread what you had said...

I'm interested in the fact that if Gambio has proved to be a pure 'verus' then Gorilla and Tarzan must have been too, and also Tarzan's parents, whom I believe were Tepel with his probable father being Luit.

Tepel definitely was a verus; born in the wild.

Interesting to note that Fons is unknown; as Tesua and Tushi are both Tepel and his daughters, therefore they are unknown in regards to subspecies too. I look forward to hearing if he's verus or not! If he is then they've seriously messed up by castrating him along with Jing and Ghineau (who are both hybrids). Particularly as he was a proven breeder.
I hope for their sakes he isn't. His mother was Franje and he had an unknown father so they may never know.

And it makes sense for both Gorilla and Luit to be verus, as they were either wildcaught themselves or F1-descendants from wildcaught chimps.

They are still signed in the mangrove hall, so I suppose they are still there.
(or he/she, if it is one individual only).

If you have any recent photos of the following chimpanzees that'd be great;

Tushi
Tesua
Morami
Moniek
Raimee
Geisha

I think I can safely identify Giambo, Fons, Jing, Ghineau, Gaby, Mama, Jimmie, Roos, Erika, Marlene and Móni.

Rest in peace Mama :( you were one of my favourite apes ever. I truly enjoyed seeing you whenever I was in Holland.
What a shame; another verus gone, not to mention one of the zoo's most iconic animals.
And that leaves Jimmie..

Now some good news from Burgers Zoo.

Spring 2017 the largest Mangrove display worldwide will be opened. A 3000 square meter greenhouse will be built inspired on the Shipstern reserve in Belize, which has been sponsored by Burgers Zoo already for 27 years. The new mangrove display will feature Caribbean manatee (with a 12 x 1.8 meter viewing window), birds, reptiles, fish, crabs, mangrove jellyfish and butterflies. It will consist of mangrove and a small part of tropical dry forest and will eventually house the largest collection of Mangrove species worldwide. It is planned to be built on a part of the current bird section of the park.

At the approximate age of 59 years, Chimpanzee "Mama" died this morning. Especially because of the work of Frans de Waal she was probably one of the most famous chimpanzees worldwide.

Funny how I became aware of 'Mama' again just recently from reading this thread and that now she has died. She seemed to be the pivotal animal in the formation of the original Arnhem group- I remember the descriptions of her as the original 'boss' and how she had such a strong personality they had to temporarily remove her in order to allow the three adult males to establish themselves without her over-bearing presence.

Definately an icon for Burgers.

She was a real character indeed. Every time I visited she would be doing something different. I noticed that she had a very close bond with Jimmie, and Moniek and Morami often looked to her as well.

It's such a shame she's gone. I think that Burgers' should put up a statue for her by the chimp island. That'd be beautiful.

Morami has now assumed the new dominant female position following her death.

The whole group seem shaken by it. I would be too if I were to lose someone who had been so influential and such an important part of my life.

Móni, Erika and Marlene don't know who they're going to have missed :')

The new Mangrove display will be built south-east of the current one, so the area where not secretary birds, vultures, E. partridges etc. live The old hall will remain standing until the new one is finished, to transport the plants.

Small news:
- For the first time in Burgers Zoo a kea was born
- Recently a male golden-bellied mangabey arrived from Wuppertal, a female from Budapest will soon follow.
- The last months a roadrunner dating center was set up with 4.3 animals from all over Europe, this has resulted in 2 pairs, one of which already has laid an age.

Exciting bird news! Are the mangabeys going to join the current trio living with Bauwi's gorilla group?
