Burgers' Zoo Burgers Zoo 2016

A screaming piha has hatched at Burgers' and is being parent reared. It's, or so they say, the first second-generation chick to hatch in zoos around the globe.

Road runner speed-dating :
Only 18 Road-runners are left in European zoos and to give the species a change 8 have been brought together at Burgers Zoo, Arnhem. Its hoped that new pairs can be formedand in this way breeding-results can be improved :).

From the 8 Roadrunners at Arnhem ( 5 males, 3 females ) sofar 2 pairs have been formed and one of these now even has produced the first egg of the experiment !

On the grounds of Burgers a wild European eagle owl-pair has raised 2 chicks. Eagle owls are still quite rare in the Netherlands ( 2015 : 20 breeding-pairs , 2016 : 16 pairs ) so Burgers is quite happy with this rare archievement.

Every year the Saba's short-tailed bat population living in the enclosure in the tunnel between the Bush and the Desert are counted and the results of this years count :
132 males
150 females
11 young which could not be sexed

240 animals ( mainly birds and turtles ) will be send in a few weeks to other European zoos in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the UK and the Czech Republic.
The area were they are living now is going to be used for the construction of the new Mangrove Hall.
Other animals living in the same area will stay at the zoo but moved to other areas. The Pelicans and European black vultures will get other enclosures, the Catbirds and the Orange-fronted fruit-doves will be released into the Bush and for the Superb fruit-doves a breeding programm will been set up behind the scenes.

Burgers recieved for some time 4 new Ring-tails from San Antonio and the Living Desert. The 2 pairs are now on display and the first matings have been observed !
The 2 older males Burgers already had are now being kept behind the scenes.

Ring Tail Lemur's/Mongoose or something else ???

Fantastic news; I only wish that more collections would show an interest in the species.

I saw adults in the old Mangrove-hall and also ( some of ) the young were display in the Mangrove-hall and could be seen through a window from out-side. Through the reflection of the sun it was however quite difficult to see them very well but I saw at least 2 babies.

It's official; Burgers' Mangrove 2.0 is underway. Various animals moved out, including the majority of the bird section (eg griffon vultures went to GaiaZoo) and various reptiles and fish; some moved to other places in the zoo.
All progress with/news about the new exhibit can be found at this link:

Not really the majority, but still a large chunk will either be built over or disappear behind the scenes.

Cinereous vultures, pelicans (to Safari), cat birds and orange-fronted fruit doves (both Bush) will be relocated within the park. basically the whole area between the old entrance, pelicans and the current mangrove hall will disappear...
