Confirmed by Burgers' Zoo on facebook that it is indeed to try to introduce them into the former bighorn sheep enclosure, where the prairie dogs and NA porcupines already are.

Does anyone know whether prairie dogs have ever been mixed with a pig or peccary species anywhere else before, and whether that has been succesful?

I kind of wonder whether the peccaries would not be a danger to the prairie dogs, given their omniovorous nature and the fact they might sometimes hunt small creatures?

I assume that at the very least the prairie dogs will have their own area with their burrows.

I assume that at the very least the prairie dogs will have their own area with their burrows.

The animals will likely get some sort of seperation (or atleast restrain the peccaries to a region of the enclosure (maybe with some wire, like they keep the banteng in a certain area of the Rimba Plains), but the pit in the front of the enclosure is very specifically designed for the prairidogs, as theres no slope in/out and only some treebranches, which are unfitting for the peccaries to get on anyways. But only time will tell.

Can confirm the spectacled langur is still in the zoo and visible.

The zoo has claimed the langur's absence for a while now, so no worries

With a day off of school I was finally able to make an early visit to Burgers zoo

I could be mistaken or have missed some news, but the bush seems to have gained a third wood duck


Also in the Bush I was able to take a sneak peak into the new Bush restaurant, which seems to have gained a lot of rockwork inside
(Not a great picture, I know. There's more rockwork than the picture shows)


I spoke to a keeper in the Mangrove, who mentioned that a pair of red-legged honeycreepers have moved behind the scenes. They also gained five new males.

They also mentioned two violacious euphonias having left the nest (the path is also no longer blocked)

In the Desert, a new fence has been added in the back for the peccaries, but they're yet to come outside

Wood ducks was known yea. First female died quite early in the time they had them. So more recently they got two new females.

I believe that rock was already there but got renovated. It was the rock across the toilets with an asian carriage infront of it.
But only time will tell how the restaurant will end up looking!

This rock was closer to the window, and there are also more rocks where there used to be a window separating the entrance hall from the dining area (couldn't see the window, so I'm not sure if it's still there). I couldn't take a picture because of the reflections

Edit: decided to go back for some more pictures

The window has indeed been removed, and a lot of benches were added to the "outside" eating area (not sure if these are permanent, but they sure seem to be placed with intended design)


The rock that used to have the cart has expanded immensely and they seem to have completely separated the restaurant from the toilet area

Perhaps a sign of some terrarium(s) coming to that area with species that fit the bush... I'd be all up for it.

My mind instantly jumped to nocturnal enclosures, but I'm not getting my hopes up (for nocturnes nor reptiles), knowing BZ, it'll just remain a restaurant

The Bush restaurant is getting closer and closer to being finished. There's more rockwork than before and some plants are being added. It looks like there's going to be a small water feature near the entrance


In Desert, the sign for the scorpions has been removed. The light were also turned off


Room is being made for new signs at the porcupine enclosure, probably for the peccary signs


The bighorn sheep were finally removed from the road signs


Signage in the old peccary enclosure says that the enclosure will be changed to house a new species, unlike other enclosures that are just waiting for a different species. It seems BZ has plans for the new inhabitants

Skunks are a good option, maybe the enclosure will be split with tortoises. But only time will tell.
Curious to see why the signage for the scorpion is gone.

Not too many options indeed. Striped skunk and white-nosed coati are obvious options (or both). Ring-tailed coati are on the phase-out, so wouldn't be a doubling and they don't need a high barrier, just climbing opportunities. Coati have even been acquired for the opening of the Desert as a backup plan, but were never needed and were only kept behind the scenes. As much as I would like to see a mix of reptiles, that is probably hard to get right climatically and with hibernation also means an empty exhibit for half of the year. A pity as a Nuremberg type exhibit with small rodents, lizards and tortoises would have fitted very well philosopically speaking.

One of the reasons yea. And the enclosure would need too many changes..
Coati are basically out the question. But that makes it even more tough, but we shall see what the future holds!

A question about the Bush and to a lesser extent the Desert and Mangrove - how are the free-ranging animals managed? For instance, finding and removing dead specimens and keeping track of numbers?

The area is very unpopular with the birds, so skunks wouldn't be too big an issue. Coatis would require trees and climbing structures that would attract birds

Plus they climb and thus escape, and turning the whole desert concept more into an arid forest
