Mexican House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) were the most common sighting in the Desert for me.
Now that's interesting, as these species are usually more difficult to see. For me it's always the doves and quails that are seen most

Was finally able to visit again after a while and I think I was able to figure this one out! Some of the extremely colourful birds of the Desert actually look rather dull in certain times of the year.

These birds:

Were indeed quite active today, but they're not Mexican house finches (which, admittedly, were also more active than usual).

Sadly my lack of photos from the Desert (and the fact that my visit is, as of yesterday, over a month ago) mean that I cannot confirm which one I saw, although what you say is very plausible.
