Chester Zoo Bushmasters coming to Chester

This is probably common knowledge, but no-one seems to have posted about it yet?
In the latest issue of the membership magazine, it mentions that later this year Chester is hoping to become the first collection in the UK to keep Bushmasters.
A pair will be coming from Jacksonville, who were born to parents from Amazonian Brazil, according to the article.
Many moons ago, when people were posting what species they would like to see in the UK, I included Bushmasters in my list, so I'm quite excited about this.

Id guess maybe RORA but thats purely speculation on my part. Also mentioned that they will be getting Red Duiker which will be mixed with the Okapi. And there also hoping to bring in more Duiker in future. Aswell as more Dik Diks.

They already have a Natal Red Duiker (it's a single female being held offshow).


I'd have thought it was very unlikely that Bushmasters will go in RotRA - that house is pretty solidly South-east Asian in theme.

I suspect the Bushmasters will go in a new exhibit!!

If I remember rightly bushmasters need spacious accommodation at a lower temperature than most tropical snakes. I can't think of an ideal place among the existing exhibits: perhaps they will create a new one inside the jaguar building.

However, despite claims to the contrary, Chester will not be the first zoo in the UK to have bushmaster.

Flower (1929) records that bushmaster were exhibited at London Zoo as long ago as 1850.

I had wondered if London Zoo had kept them in the past. Now I know for sure.
