Port Lympne Wild Animal Park Bustah the chimpanzee and the old chimp group

I think, judging by photos, the cage the batchelor group is in does look more suited to chimps, what with the tunnels above the cage and that. Seems like a group of chimps would utilise them more than the gorillas.

Bachelor accomodation.

There are three bachelor Gorilla quarters at Port Lympne;

1. The larger Round construction with the strange overhead shutes leading to a 'loft'. I think Aspinall was becomng even more eccentric when this was designed. It even has a Gorilla weathervane on the top... But the basic concept of being able to split the accomodaton into 'pie' quarters with sliding mesh panels was a good one. I have once or twice seen Gorillas in the shutes and playing together in the 'loft' but it was many years ago when they were much younger and I doubt whether as adults the males venture in them nowadays- mostly they just sit quietly in the straw. Chimps would probably use it all more fully.

2. The newer 'pavilion' behind the DeBrazza/Colobus enclosure. They didn't bother with any frills on this one-its a much simpler design more like the old original gorilla cages at Howletts.

3. The older round 'tower' cage where the infamous Chimpanzee accident occured. The outdoor part is connected by a tunnel/slide door with the outside cage area of No 2. Male Gorillas which have spent time in here are Djala, then Jomie, and now two younger males 'Djumbah' and 'Bubu.'

The two larger enclosures both have access to the enormous open outdoor areas. Its true Chimpanzees would probably also make a lot more use of these than the Gorillas do!

Yes i agree even though i think it is brilliant for Gorillas and when i go to Port Lympne they are allways inside having a great time!
Fantastic Creatures

According to the studbook , Jane was wild-born 1974 then imported to the USA in 1975 . She transferred to Regent's Park in 1980 and then to Windsor Safari Park on 22nd October 1987 . She was transferred to Monkeyworld on 31st May 1993

Evie was wild-born in Sierra Leone 1n 1971 and received by Windsor in 1972 . She was transferred to Monkeyworld on 31st May 1993 .

I have just checked the Monkeyworld web-site . There is no sign of Evie or Jane in their chimp groups so - unless they have moved on , which I doubt - I assume they have died since 1993 .

jane died 1995 and evie died 2006.Does anyone know when bixa suffered a stroke and where rodney came from?also any info on janes son bob who died at monkeyworld in 1998?
thanks for all the info so far

The Chimpanzees were in a small for Port Lympne standards circular cage. Much too small for gorillas. After the accident with the young boy and the chimps moved, the cage was demolished.

I saw the Chimpanzees when they were at Howletts but not after they moved to port Lympne. However I believe their cage was the simple tall circular one situated below the long flights of steps from the Mansion? That cage is still in use as bachelor Gorilla quarters.
