Butterfly House & Aquarium Butterfly House and Aquarium News

The Butterfly House & Aquarium recently welcomed the arrival of 3 new cow-nose stingrays. The stingrays, all young, came onto exhibit at the facility sometime in early 2019 (prior to Feb. 5). A KSFY interview with the Director of Development, Lindsey Barwald, also reveals that the rays are approximately 3 lbs. each, and are currently open for viewing.

BHA will soon be saying goodbye to its trio of Cownose Rays.

Press release:
"Since receiving the cownose rays in early 2019, they've grown from 8" pups to 24" adults, and need more space to grow and thrive. Animal welfare is our top priority at the BHA and we strive to provide the absolute best care for all of the animals within our facility. As a result, we have made the decision to send our cownose rays to a partner aquarium where they will live in a larger exhibit with other cownose rays, continuing to spark joy and inspiration with new families.

The stingray exhibit will be closed to touching beginning on April 11 to help the cownose rays prepare for their travel, and they will leave in early May."

Since the present version of the Butterfly House and Aquarium seems to only have room for a few small tanks for smaller fish, perhaps when it moves to the zoo grounds, it’ll be able to add larger species like sharks and sea turtles?

It would seem so. According to this article, the Butterfly House CEO said that a future aquarium could include a walkthrough type aquarium with sharks.

On May 10th, the aquarium announced they acquired 2+ horseshoe crabs (species not specified) which will be on display in the new Eastern Shore Touch Pool in the future.

Congrats to our May Sea Star of the Month! Say hello to our new horseshoe crabs! These guys are currently living behind the scenes while we finish the new Eastern Shore Touch Pool. Horseshoe crabs are not actually crabs but are more closely related to scorpions. Their blue blood is used in medical applications for sterilization and vaccines. They live from the Gulf of Maine to Florida and use their pointy tails as a rudder in the water. While we finish their exhibit, check out our smaller horseshoe crabs in our Ocean in Motion tank in the aquarium! . . . #BHA #SiouxFalls #SeaStar #Crabs #Scorpion #SeaStarOfTheMonth #HorseshoeCrabs | Butterfly House & Aquarium | Butterfly House & Aquarium · Original audio
