51 ) Chaetodon nigropunctatus - Black-spotted butterflyfish, no information found that it has been kept in captivity and also no photos in the Gallery.
52 ) Chaetodon nippon - Japanese butterflyfish. Also from this species I couldn't find any information about captive-keeping but with the large number of Aquariums in Japan I guess it has been kept there. There are no photos of this species in the Gallery.
53 ) Chaetodon ocellatus - Spotfin butterflyfish, aka the Yellowmargin butterflyfish is at the moment in Europe only kept at Paris CineAqua Trocadero but I've seen it myself at X-caret in Mexico and also the Maritime Aquarium in the USA has kept it. There are a few photos in the Gallery and this one was taken at Paris :

I thought the Dot-and Dash buttterflyfish was an other name for the Spotband butterflyfish ( Chaetodon punctatofasciatus ) - which will be number 62 on my list but then I googled Dot and Dash bff and it seem that the name is used for both Sunset and Spotband bff !

What is the goal of this thread ? These beautifull fishes have sofar gotten little attention on ZooChat. From less then half the species pictures are in the Gallery and further there are hardly any notes and mentions of these animals in any thread.
I hope that :
- more ZooChatters will have a closer look at the marine/coral fishes and try to find out which species they are looking at.
- You try to find out how common or how rare the species seen is/are in zoos.
- Try to make some decent photos of the animals you see.
-Report your sightings of Butterflyfishes at this thread so we can get a more complete overview of which species are kept and where they are kept. I'm sure that esp. in the USA and in Australia a lot of species are kept unnoticed by ZooChatters.
The above is not only true for the Genus Chaetodon but in fact for most marine / coralfishes and with a little more attention I think a lot more rare and unussual observations can be made !

- foureye butterflyfish (Chaetodon capistratus)
- spotfin butterflyfish (Chaetodon ocellatus)
- saddle butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium)
- threadfin butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga)
- redtail butterflyfish (Chaetodon collare)

Raccoon, saddle and threadfin are all quite well represented in the Gallery but from Foureye, spotfin and redtail butterflyfish only very few photos are in the Gallery so if you have the possibility, please try to make some of them - also pictures of the aquariums they are kept in are in many cases intresting.

The species I saw on Monday are :

Last saturday I visited Burgers Zoo in Arnhem - the Netherlands and because they have an enormous Aquarium ( Burger's Ocean ) I had hoped ( and expected ) to find several Butterflyfishes but only 2 - the most commonly kept - were on display in several of the tanks, these being the Threadfin butterflyfish and the Raccoon butterflyfish. From both species I've uploaded a photo in the Burger's Zoo Gallery ( http://www.zoochat.com/162/threadfin-butterflyfish-ray-surgeonfish-460604/ and http://www.zoochat.com/162/raccoon-butterflyfishes-460605/ ).
Yesterday at Rotterdam Zoo I started to search directly for the Banded butterflyfish ( Chaetodon striatus ) because Rotterdam is the only European collection with this species in its collection and there are still no photos of this species in the Gallery.
I didn't found any because many of the tropical seawater aquariums were being re-newed and empty or already filled with water and housed with some commoner species.. ( hopefully next time ! ).
I did however see 2 other species of the genus Cheatodon:
Chaetodon kleini
Chaetodon ID ( see picture here : http://www.zoochat.com/36/butterflyfish-id-465617/ )

Chaetodon kleini
Chaetodon ID ( see picture here : http://www.zoochat.com/36/butterflyfish-id-465617/ )
The second unknown species has been identified by devilfish and isn't a Chaetodon ( ), so I only saw one species at Rotterdam Zoo.

Fantastic thread, vogelcommando! Certainly this is maybe my favourite genus of fishes as they're so beautiful, diverse and fully coloured and there are so many species. I wish to have photographed all the species that count with photos at the gallery! However I got a small collection of photos with the species that I've seen in my life, that are:
Chaetodon auriga at Aquarium du La Rochelle (France) (2009) and Acuario de Zaragoza (Spain) (2009) (the latter disappeared already in my second visit (2012) as their formerly marine tank was transformed into a freshwater tank).

The species seen at SeaWorld San Diego this year are all in the tank "Journey to Atlantis", that formerly hold the so much wished Commerson's dolphins that I arrived late to see. It's curious to see the butterflyfishes in this tank: one pass much time exploring each corner, making sure that you saw every species kept inside... and the you go around to see more exhibits, coming back in a while, and you see other new species of butterflyfish not seen before... and you do it again and see even a third species!!! This tank housed also a fish that I photographed as a "invited guess", very small in the corner of the frame of a photo of Aetobatus narinari. Unfortunately it has not enough quality for save the photo... I searched it in the genus Chaetodon and don't found it... and that is because it was not a Chaetodon but a close parent, Johnrandallia nigrirostris! Well, I suppose that I will have more opportunities in life to photograph this species again.

That "Journey to Atlantis" is - at least for me - a must-see I guess, sounds really very interesting !
