Buttonwood Park Zoo Buttonwood Park Zoo News

Last year's otter pups have moved on per the zoo's newsletter. Sisters, Shamrock and Clover have moved to the Milwaukee County Zoo while their brother Lucky went to the Prospect Park Zoo.

Went to Buttonwood again this weekend and several changes took place in the rainforest building as far as animals changing exhibits. The N.A. Ruddy Ducks are no moved outside but currently are not on exhibit. The Argentine Ruddy Ducks and the Green Aracari have now gone into the Cotton-top exhibit. The Guira Cuckoos are actually in the first and third exhibits on the left. (That was an error on my part in my original post.) The Emperor Tamarins are now signed into the second exhibit where I saw them last week, and the Goeldi's Monkeys sign is down but I confirmed they are off exhibit due to the baby and will be back on exhibit once the baby gets older.

The zoo has added a new species of duck since my last visit. They now have 1.2 Maned Ducks. This now gives the zoo 36 species of waterfowl.

On my recent visit over the weekend I noticed the zoo now has a Himalayan Monal, but it is not on exhibit yet. I saw it in the background behind another exhibit. Also the zoo has a 3rd River Otter, I believe this is a new animal as the 3 offspring from last year were supposed to have been sent off to other zoos already.

The zoo recently added a Caiman Lizard and 2.1 Brazilian Teal to the Rainforest building.

This little zoo is rapidly making improvements and expanding their collection it would seem. Their waterfowl collection seems especially great.

Visited the zoo today, first time in a couple of months. New species noted today were
Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker (a weird and cool little fish)
Sora
Puna Teal
Yellow-billed Teal (subspecies unknown at the moment)

I confirmed with the zoo that they keep the oxyptera subspecies of Yellow-billed Teal called Sharp-winged Teal

Where do they house the sora? I feel like they're very small to be housed with primates, but they are quite fast!

They are currently housed with the Emperor Tamarins, along with several other species of birds.

I visited with the kids this weekend for the first time. They have Dani, Dunkin and Donut in their otter habitat. The keepers and volunteers were nice and knowledgeable - I started talking to the otter keeper about zoo breeding programs, which is what led me to this forum. Nice little zoo. We missed the red pandas (my daughter was disappointed) but I guess that’s an excuse to visit again soon. They have an interestingly large wild turkey vulture population visiting the bison, bald eagle and a host of other exhibits where they smelled food.
