The Buttonwood Park Zoo is located in New Bedford, MA and was established in 1894. The zoo claims it is the 12th oldest zoo in the country. The zoo focused on native species at first but by the 60's started exhibiting exotics. The zoo started to deteriorate in the early 90's and eventually closed in 1994 to rebuild the zoo according to their masterplan. In 2000, the zoo reopened with a focus on native Massachusetts wildlife with the exception to lynx, cougars, bison and two female Asian elephants, Emily and Ruth. They also opened a rare domestic breed farm that is considered one of the best in the nation. In the AZA’s 2003 accreditation report, the team of zoo professionals who visited the Zoo called Buttonwood Park Zoo “one of the finest small zoos in the United States”.
