buy land and preserve wildlife?

So I was looking at land to buy in eBay and some land plots in Bulgaria go for as little as £400. I placed bids on 3 of them and lost, 1 was a 3,200 square metre forest which I lost to some logging company for £800.
Apart from the oceans the Balkans is pretty much the only place in this world that has more wildlife than people and it's a damn shame to see it become more and more westernised.

I wanted to see if there was anyone else out there who has tried to buy some land simply to conserve its wildlife and protect it from farmers and logging companies.
WWF does this sort of thing but I'm guessing they have their hands tied with the more urgent parts of the world.

There are a number of wildlife conservation groups that purchase land or habitat in the country of origin for species they conserve here in the UK - I was reading about one recently that purchased land in Argentina as a potential release site after realising that habitat was a major issue for the species they are conserving. The land is now part of a Biopark in Argentina itself apparently - but I can't for the life of me remember who I was reading about. Sorry.
