Caldwell Zoo: A natural for family fun!

Caldwell Zoo is located in Tyler, Texas, and was first opened to the public in 1954. For almost 50 years admission was free, and finally in 2003 an entrance fee was charged to help offset expansion plans.

Featured Exhibits:

East Africa

The premier set of habitats for this tiny yet acclaimed zoo. Wildebeest, greater kudu, impala, warthog, Grevy's zebra, african elephant, giraffe, lion, lesser flamingo, ibis, crowned crane, dik-dik, black rhino, cheetah, blue monkey, black-backed jackal, lemur, black-footed penguin, cichlid fish, spurred tortoise, bongo, yellow-backed duiker, colobus monkey, leopard and a variety of other African birds are represented in this area of the zoo.

Native Texas

Animal species: coati, gray fox, otter, pelican, wild turkey, longhorn cattle, deer, bison, owl, crested caracara, hawk, bald eagle, bobcat, ocelot, jaguar, mountain lion, turtle and alligator.

Other exhibits include a Texas Reptile/Aquarium, South America, Entry Plaza Islands, Wild Bird Walkabout and Petting Pen.
 
I believe this zoo needs to expand its elephant enclosure. Could they just reinforce the fencing on the savanna and allow the elephant to mingle with the other species?

There may be others, but this is the only zoo in America where I have seen jackals listed. (They seem like they should be easy to get and maintain, not sure why more zoos don't have them).

I am likely going here in early March during a week-long central Texas zoo trip - will look forward to seeing them.
 
They haven't had Jackals in several years. But, when they did have them they were mixed with Blue Monkeys. Now, sadly- meerkats,
 
Probably not, they are full to the brim with Blacks. No more room in the proverbial Inn.
 
I contacted Caldwell a week or so ago to inquire on the new bear exhibit. It officially opened to the public on March 1st. I need to get out to Tyler again.
 
I've seen the new bear exhibit. Sadly, it is very small and not up to par with the rest of the zoo's exhibits.
 
That's disappointing. Is there more empty space surrounding the exhibit that could have been used? I have not seen it.
 
Yes, it is at the end of a trail with a huge undeveloped area behind. Just kind of mind boggling why they did it this way.
 
The zoo has two adjustments to the cat collection that are both a vast improvement.

1) The North America exhibit that used to have a geographically out of place serval now has a much more appropriate ocelot.

2) The leopard exhibit in the Africa section that was a bit small for leopards now houses the serval.

And of course they weren't African Leopards either,so at least now it is geographically correct.
