I dont know all the reasons they chose the National Zoo over LA which your right might have made more sense since Maharani isnt related to Billy and could breed with him. But it is possible that the fact Bozie, Shanthi, Kamala and Swarna all lived together at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka before moving to North America. Perhaps they felt they might remember each other and therefore blend better as a herd. Maybe they want to study the possiblity of them remembering each other. Maybe its because the girls are Sri Lankan Asian Elephants. Any of these ideas could have played some role.

To me it appears that the main reason for choosing DC was the fact that Bozie, Shanti, Kamala, and Swarna were from the same orphanage and Calgary wants to keep the "family" ties for a functional herd.

The gorillas broke into the kitchen again! Seriously the zoo really needs to be much more careful with the gorillas because it appears they are smarter than their keepers. This is the second time in a year.

In all honesty there should be employees fired over this situation as it is the second time the gorillas have been able to access the kitchen. There is a long line of individuals desperately wanting to work in a zoo and even primate keepers are easily replaceable.
I agree with you. Sure the public might not have been in danger this time but what happens when another door is left open. Hopefully these people are not also in contact with the super dangerous animals. You would think they would be on high alert after the last incident, especially when the keeper was fired. Twice in 6 months, with the same animals, who themselves could have been hurt. Nope clearly these two need to be made bigger examples of. Mistakes happen but shesh.

Calgary just cant win. Two more penguins have died. Eduardo, a Humboldt, died of a fungal infection Sunday and then Akemi, a gentoo, died of avian malaria on Monday. That brings the death total in the last year up to 6 I believe.
