Calgary Zoo Calgary Zoo News 2014

The zoos otter pups are now venturing out of their den and learning to swim with mom Charlotte.

Which means the departure of Dr Veasey for Europe is not too far away either.....

On which basis? I (always) thought the transfer of elephants out to an accredited institution and the arrival of Indian rhino (now) is ((and now) will be) his swan song at Calgary?

Though: shame for Calgary to be without a great director ..., Jack is an veritable welcome addition to any zoo management team!

There was an article I posted back when his departure was announced that said he would be leaving shortly after the elephants departed. I suppose shortly could mean anything but it sounded like it wouldnt be all that long after the elephants left. To me I thought maybe he had the new job just waiting for him but he wouldnt leave Calgary until he had made sure the transfer was safely completed. Get that one last job done before saying goodbye to Calgary. You could be right though and shortly means he will leave after the arrival of the rhinos. Although if I had been the person announcing his departure I would have said he will be leaving shortly after the rhinos arrival if that were the case. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

The first of the komodo dragons has arrived and shes 28 year old Loka. It doesnt says shes from Toronto but I would guess she is based on the info available. Shes the oldest dragon in captivity.

A group of 4 (2 of each) 6 month olds will be arriving from Colchester Zoo. They are from the same clutch but it would be years before they are breedable so swaps will eventually happen. They will undergo a mandatory 60 day quarantine once they arrive.

The exhibit opens June 1st.

You're right it is nice to see caribou in a Canadian zoo. I wish others would switch over.

The first Greater One Horned Rhino has arrived. 10 year old male Sabari, origionally from San Diego Safari Park but coming from Micanopy Zoological Preserve has begun to settle in. It is hoped a female will join him in 2015 and breeding can start with offspring heading to Europe.

The article also mentions the rhinos space could become home to the pandas in 2018 so that seems weird. Why bring in a new huge animal only to send it away in 3 years to make room for a different animal with different exhibit needs for just 5 years? Perhaps something about the statement was a mistake.

From my understanding the space will hold Greater One-Horned Rhinos for 3 years, then Giant Pandas for 5 years, and then finally Orangutans permanently from 2023 onwards. Bizarre but possibly all true.

Seems like a lot of money to waste for 4 such different species over 8 years. At least Toronto took their Amur Tiger exhibit and remodeled it, which was needed and planned anyway, and just added a few things with pandas in mind. When they leave in 2018 it will be pretty much in move in condition for the tigers return. That makes sense. Elephants to rhinos makes sense. But then to pandas who have totally different requirements is funny. They could just send Toronto their tigers for the time being and use their space. A panda for tiger swap. Toronto will be in the market for breeding Amurs by then. Then swapping to orangs would be costly remodel. Sounds like a lot of money down the drain.

The white black bear has been given the name Manuka according to facebook.

A gentoo penguin chick hatched June 27th to parents Arabel and Weddell.
