Call for reform of marine fish pet trade

Nearly all US aquarium fish are sourced directly from the wild - Oceanographic

If anyone is thinking of getting a saltwater tank- try and stock it with captive bred fish
Not exactly a revelation - it's good to get some precise numbers on the percentage of marine aquarium fish that are wild caught, but I would imagine many people in the aquarium hobby were well aware most marine fish are wild caught. Only a handful of species are regularly captive bred (eg percula and ocellaris clowns, some cardinalfishes, I believe some seahorse species, and more recently some captive bred yellow tangs have become available), but almost everything else is invariably wild caught. The aquarium supplier Biota has made some great progress in captive breeding of marine species, but they keep their methods secret so do not allow other companies and private breeders to replicate their methods. I'm not totally opposed to wild collection if it is closely managed and regulated, but that is unfortunately not the case for many of the main exporting regions in southeast Asia.
