Callithrix pygmaea

DDcorvus, thanks for the advice about the papers. I know they are real strict about it and it can be real difficult, but I'll find it worth to try it even when the outcome is that I won't get a permit. And by the way, you know a lot of it. Did you ever tried it for yourself?

Just got a response from the ministry. In the Netherlands all primates, also the pygmy marmoset, is forbidden to keep...

I doubt Marjolein feels that way but I guess that is a good thing for the animals as they will not be folling into the wrong hands, Not that I think Marjolein is the wrong hand.

If I went on a physics forum and asked about getting my hands on fissile uranium for the purposes of peaceful research, I think everyone would be quite happy that the ministry turned me down. :D

I don't know Marjolein, but if he/she came on this forum trying to do 'research' about getting marmosets without doing the proper homework, then I think it is fair to say that the marmosets would have been in the wrong hands.

This is a fantastic result.

My intention about this forum was getting to talk with people who have experience with them. So I could ask them some specific questions. And not for doing research on a forum, I'm smarter than that.

No I wasn't happy to got that answer from the ministry. It's a good thing that they want to control it so not everyone can get all kind of animals. But it's a shame for the people who really like and love these marmosets or other animals and can't keep them dispite they give the animals everything that they need and want.

But rules are rules, can't do nothing about it.

OFFTOPIC: The main thing that is wrong about the USA is that the people there wouldn't ever fathom the idea that there might be something wrong with the USA :p

ONTOPIC: YAY for our government and laws on primates :) There might be serious people in Holland that can't keep these species because of them, but the risks that some would end up in the wrong hands (or best case scenario, all of them at "Stichting AAP") would be far too high (IMO).

What are some weird and wonderful creatures that can be kept in Holland?

I'd tell you America's but I don't have that much time. I'm an American and I know that there's something wrong with us. Mabye that's just because I'm part Puerto Rican.:D

OFF TOPIC- Has anyone on here been to the zoo in Puerto Rico. If not, I might be the one as I go down that way every once and a while. I'll make sure to take pictures.

In january 2013 there will be a postive list. They were even making troubles about a normal house dog because they belong to the family of wolves.... So if they even make problems out of that.... I'm wondering what will be on the list

At this moment you can keep anything except primates, cetacea and most wild cat species (there are exceptions as by example it is legal to keep serval or felis chaus). Anything else is legal for now. As Marjolein said the government is planning to make a positive list for mammals from January 1st 2013. If they will make it is not clear yet and which mammals will be on it is also still unclear. The Univerisity of Wageningen designed a methodology which animals are suitable to be kept in captivity, but they shot themselves a bit in the foot as one of the results was indeed that dogs are not suitable. Of course dogs will not be banned but it means they do have to play with the designed methodology and this will take time.

Marjolein, if I were you I'd be focuing on getting those Servals and Jungle Cats before anything:D It's a shame that your favorite group (or what I'm assuming is your favorite) is banned in your country. You could always go to work for a zoo that holds the species and work with them there if you're qualified. Honestly, if you're not qualified to take them in a zoo setting, it might be best that you didn't get premission to keep the animal.
