I've just received an email from one of the local camera shops about the new Canon 5DS and 5DS-R full-frame bodies that will be available in Australia in June or July.

Along with 61 autofocus points and dual Digic 6 processors, it can take images at a massive resolution of 50.3 megapixels!

That's more than double what the 5D MkIII currently offers!

I read a review online (or maybe it was just an opinion piece) that suggested that 50Mp may not be a good thing for the average photographer who does not enlarge their photos to billboard-size. The rationale was that the more you zoom in, the more detail you will see, and the more post-processing you will want to do.

From my point of view, photographing an animal that is some distance away will produce a better photo when cropped and enlarged if you have 50Mp. You'll have much better resolution.

This is a fair point. Do you plan to buy it?

Or you could just spend the same money on a longer telephoto lens.

I use the 5Diii which in all regards is pretty much the perfect SLR camera. I must confess the new S (50MP) is tempting, but overkill for the vast majority of photographers. I will be using my current camera indefinitely.
