Longleat Safari & Adventure Park Cape Buffalo & other past animals

I was thinking that about the penguins. Also, you'd never see them!
And they definitely had 2 white lion cubs born at the park, but I think they gradually changed into the normal colour as they grew up.

Penguins in the lake? Wouldn't the sea lions have eaten them?

It seemed rash at the time. I saw one on the bank near the boat jetty; it could have got into the water and would have been impossible to locate in the lake. Penguins were (later?) in the children's zoo area; there is a photo of them there in an early guidebook. It is not too surprising that there were penguins as Chipperfield was importing them at the time. Regarding the "white lions" there was a litter of 4 cubs in which two were "white" when born, but they had changed to normal colouration in 5 months; that does not make them white lions. Longleat had gorillas and chimpanzees at the same time on different islands. They also had gibbons in the early days though I don't have a record of what species. Certainly they had cheetah in the reserve, and also for a period had both African and Asian elephants at the same time. Some other species not many people recall include Przewalski horse, Grevy zebra and kangaroos.

Hope this works as I've never tried this before, but this is the image I mentioned earlier. Looked it up, and these aren't Paignton's ele, they were only there for a year whilst they were young. I guess the babies might be the last elephants who lived at Longleat though.

Yeah, that's something new I've learned today that Longleat had penguins, never knew! Though they might be part of Animal Adventure, the new attraction opening in the Summer.

And I've seen that pic via google too, though from the four visits when Longleat had elephants I don't remember hotwire seperating you from the animals.

Lol, the hotwire sticks in my memory because I remember thinking that it sucked that the elephants couldn't come up to your car (I was very young at the time...).

How exactly was it laid out? Cos the elephants would have to cross the road in order to reach their paddock from their house.

I believe that's what they did :)
Same situation at most safari parks (Woburn, WMSP) because they have to be fenced in.

changing the subject quickly, when exactly should animal adventure be opening?

Summer 2009. So far the confirmed attractions in it are

- A bigger bird show arena.
- The already present Butterfly Garden.
- The Parma Wallabies from Pets Corner.
- Siberian Weasels
- Going by concept art on a Longleat podcast, lemurs or red pandas.

And ashley-h, I've only been to Longleat in terms of safari parks so I didn't really realise that. And when I last saw elephants at Longleat (2002) I was only eight, so my memory of their actual husbandry is foggy.

And does anyone remember the Burmese Python they used to keep in the current rat enclosure in Pets Corner? I still remember when I was 2 or 3 seeing the keeper trying to clean the enclosure, but the snake was actually slithering out of the vivarium onto the keeper's broom.

3 African Elephants went from Chipperfields to Colchester, including the 'cruelty case video' bull 'Tembo'. But I don't know if Chipperfields were still involved with Longleat then or if they came from a Chipperfield centre.

I think the babies in the picture were probably the last Longleat group though I have seen a number of photos which only shows 3.

Do you know where Paignton's 'Gay' and 'Duchess' came from if not Longleat?

They were wild caught, and I think Longleat was their first "home" whilst they were young. Could be wrong though.

Thanks, and yes i remeber the snake she was on animal park a few times, cant remeber her name though

Re the photo itd probably be either Rhanne or maybe Jhoti, the female asian, remember the circus eles and other safari eles were transported between parks a lot.
Maybe the larger african is Marge?
