Captive Beluga Whales in the U.S. & Canada

Just a random thought: the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium used to keep belugas. Does anyone think they should start exhibiting them again, or just stick with pinnipeds in that part of the facility?

It would be nice to see them holding the species again one day, however for now there just isn't the population for new holders, breeding animals need to be consolidated into larger groups and not scattered around to multiple facilities.

There is a definite reason that Marineland and Seaworld San Antonio have such good breeding success, and I'll give you a hint, it doesn't have to do with facility design, it has everything to do with the animals being kept in large, natural social groupings. Its how belugas truly thrive.

With Canada's banning of cetacean captivity, Marienland's days of beluga breeding might be coming to an end.

A massive transfer took place on the 9th. More news to come, but Oliver and Grayson moved to SeaWorld Orlando, Naluark to SeaWorld San Antonio, and Natasha to Nystic Aquarium. Kela and Juno definitely did not move. Whisper moved to an unknown location.

Edit: Whisper and Imaq moved to Georgia Aquarium.

The bill isn't law yet, it's still in senate. That's all I'll say on that right now...

Additionally, a law being passed doesn't suddenly reverse the success of a single facility producing more belugas in ten years than the rest of the facilities in north america over all time. Credit has to be given where credit is due.

How much chance do you think it has in getting approved by the Senate?

I'd say its a rather high chance, unfortunately. Ultimately, however, it could go either way, so until its either passed into law or tossed out, everything is still operating as it was for cetaceans in canada.

Transfers from what I can tell that occurred in the past week:
Oliver SWT to SWF
Grayson Shedd to SWF
Naluark SWF to SWT
Natasha SWT to Mystic
Whisper SWF to Georgia
Imaq SWT to Georgia

Not sure if Georgia sent any whales out or not. From what I can tell no changes at SWC.

Didn't all the belugas die at the San Diego park, leading them to fill that space with seals?
No. The former polar bear exhibit is now a harbor seal exhibit, as one of the polar bears died and the other was sent to another AZA zoo (I believe it was Pittsburgh) for breeding per polar bear SSP. There are 2.3 belugas at San Diego park.

My mistake. Must have gotten the bears and whales mixed up.

The article I found about the arrival of Imaq and Whisper said that none of Georgia’s whales left, all three are being introduced to the newcomers this week.

No changes at SWC, either, they have a pretty stable breeding group with Atla, Pearl, and Klondike.

Does anyone happen to know the names of the Marineland calves? I can't seem to find that information on the internet and they're all around 7 months old already.

As of the latest release of the MMIR, either Atla’s or Pearl’s pregnancies were not included, the other calf was presumably stillborn on September 25. Klondike is the most likely sire.

On August 31, 2018, Point Defiance Zoo officially sold or transferred Mauyak and Kimalu to the ownership of Shedd Aquarium. The two whales were already living there, it’s just a change in their management.

Beluga whale Tank at Marineland in Canada had a successful surgery. Also noted in the article:
Marineland, which has more than 50 belugas, announced earlier this month it is seeking to move seven of its belugas to other locations.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has approved permits to move two of them, which are owned by the Vancouver Aquarium, to a facility in Spain.

Marineland is awaiting a permit to move the other five whales to an undisclosed facility in the U.S.

------

I wonder which facility in the US will import the 5 whales. I also was unaware that Vancouver owned two of the whales at Marineland. And idea what facility in Spain those 2 are being sent to?

Beluga surgery at Marineland an international effort

L’Oceanografic has a male and female pair and a male calf born in 2015 (Yulka, Kairo, and son Kylu). That’s the only facility currently holding belugas in Spain, it’s in Valencia, which is where I read they were being sent. It’s the most likely location. I am not aware which two whales they own, but both were born at Marineland.

Shedd is on 24 hour watch for beluga birth, Mauyak is in the birthing window now.

Also, wonder how the passing of the horrible legislation in Canada may impact the previously planned import of 5 belugas from Marineland to the US?

Mauyak’s calf has been confirmed sired by Aurek. No word yet on any calves at Marineland (I’m sure there aren’t some by now) or the names and statuses of the five calves born there last year.
