Captive Bred Only Reptiles

I have an interest in Herps and would like to re-start a collection but would only want to source captive bred animals. through research online it seems that it is hard to get a wide variety without having to purchase animals that have been collected from the wild. Does anyone know any sellers that sell only captive bred stock that is based in the UK?

I don't know whether or not there are ones that do captive-bred only, but if you look at wholesalers, they do specify whether or not their stock is captive-bred or wild-caught.

Also, the market in reptiles fluctuates quite a bit, so it might be a matter of waiting if there's something specific you really want.
Try making enquiries in one or two reptile-only shops and see if they can source them for you

@MrT: Then I would recommend you to get some of the commonly kept reptile species, may it be cornsnake, Inland Bearded Dragon, Leopard gecko, Nelson's milksnake etc. And if you get any of the currently fancy morphs, hybrids etc., chances are even bigger that they're captive born. ;)

That is true AgileGibbon but these are wholesalers and only sell to pet shops if rarely to the private keeper.
Im not sure wether im allowed to link other forums but if you go to
Reptile Forums - HomePage Then there are loads of captive bred reptiles for sale on their classifieds. (although the forum members themselves can get into arguments easily and regularly !)

I believe all Inland bearded dragons sold in the uk will be captive born as they are so easy to breed in captivity. Same with corn snakes, leopard geckos, crested geckos, Chinese water dragons etc.

Also most Common boas, royal pythons, Green Iguanas will be too.

I think Fauna Import UK do only captive-bred, and they have quite a wide range of animals they supply. However, I think the availability is seasonal
Reptile Species Information available from Fauna Import UK

Peregrine are very supportive of wild-caught, so I wouldn't bother with them unless necessary

From looking at both these sites it looks like Peregrine have a large amount of captive bred specimens for sale.

Thanks for all your help with this guys, I really appreciate it. If you know of any other good organisations that sell mostly captive bred please let me know.

Hi Stu - it can be a problem with the fact the wholesalers sell to petshops, and this likely doesn't happen anywhere, but the reptile shop that me and AgileGibbon visit will order in anything off the wholesalers lists if you ask them to. I don't know if this is unique, but a good way to go if you're after something specific :)

O yes sorry, thats true you can order animals off of wholesale lists through pets shops. I thought AgileGibbon was meaning directly from wholesalers.
I always prefer to buy from a breeder than a petshop. Just due to the fact that you can see the parent animals, how they are kept and usualy the breeder will have a feeding record etc (although good pet shops will also do this).

Yup, again our local shop regularly breeds their own stock (mostly bearded dragons) -though they do obviously get stock from the wholesalers as well :)

I totally disagree, the majority of the UK reptile hobby are highly informed in regards to WC, CF and CB and i have seen a large drive towards UK CBing in the last few years spanning from corn snakes to fiji iguanas, leopard geckos to vine snakes.

If you're after a specific species, pet shops unless specialists ie Crystal Palace Reptiles for Royal Python morphs, wont be the best start. Most shops purchase SOME stock from wholesalers which do deal in LTC or WC animals but thats not to say there are people in the UK who arent breeding said animals themselves.

Wholesalers such as Peregrine and FaunaImport will only sell to pet shops so the prices they show are truly representative of what you, the public would pay for an animal.

In regards to Bearded dragons being CB, because of the Australian export embargo of native fauna in the 1980's all pet beardies are CB.

It really does depends what you're after but the UK herp hobby is much much huger than you'd ever think and has some true gems hidden deep within it. RFUK classifieds or captive classifieds will be best bet for UK CB animals or go along to one of the many reptile shows held across the country. Kempton Park or the CREAKS shows in Kidderminster have a wealth of CB reptiles on show and for sale.
