Wild chimpanzees have been listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act for many years, but not their captive brethren so as to keep the medical, pet, and entertainment trades for chimps open. It looks like this is about to change as captive chimps may soon be listed as endangered also. This act will likely curtail the use of chimps in medical research and the pet trade.

Finally I would say. Chimps is the one species in my view that should not be kept by private individuals. Anyone who want a chimp as a pet doesn't enough about them. Anyone who wants one as a pet and knowing enough about them needs treatment.

Ian, I looked around for an answer to your question and didn't find anything that gave a clear answer. I did find a nice homepage for the Chimp SSP that has lots of information about chimps in captivity and the wild. To answer the question, no. Most US chimps are of unknown origin and the population ha never been managed at the subspecific level.
 
What so captive chimps will be listed as Endangered but tigers won't! Come on, how many people and cats alike have to be killed before something is done! Who needs a pet tiger anyway!?
