Morgan will be matriarch by default as there is no other female. And males can’t rule the pod.
Oh yes I'm well aware of that. I'm nervous because even before the loss of Skyla and Kohana, their social structure was already quite messy and the loss of a matriarch + establishment of a new one is bound to have a lot of affect on that as well for some time.

Yeah they were starting to adapt and after so many losses the pod structure struggles a lot.

Poor Adán though :( Even though he was rejected him and Kohana still had a strong bond so it must be so confusing for him. Keto too, he was very close with Kohana. I feel so much for the pod. They’ve lost so much in such a short time.
I’m more worried about Keto than Adan… Adan is closer to Morgan.

I am quite nervous to see what will happen to the social structure now that Kohana, the matriarch, has died.

Some points to add:

I doubt Morgan will be matriarch, and as much as I hate to say it, I think it’s likely we’ll a situation similar to one San Antonio found themselves in fifteen years ago where males ruled the pod. Keto is an unusually dominant male so it’s possible.

Kohana died from cardiac malformation, a condition she tragically was born with.
Poor girl :( Knowing this now, it's amazing to think how long she lived considering she lived her entire life with it. I'm forever grateful for that. I would assume both SeaWorld and Loro Parque were aware of this and kept her under watch throughout her life. I don't know how many cases there have been of cardiac malformation in captive cetaceans, but I assume the number is not very high.

I definitely agree with you. From what I've heard from friends and mutuals who visit Loro Parque frequently, Keto has already taken on the dominant role in the pod.

Yeah it's highly likely both Seaworld and Loro Parque knew about this, so the day was always coming for them. Most with that condition die soon after birth or very early on in life, so it's a testament to both Seaworld and Loro Parque that she reached the age she did.

Unfortunate but expected news to be honest. We've learnt this can cause many problems, as evident by the past. It'll be interesting to see where Loro Parque go from here. Breeding Morgan seems to be the easiest option. Importing females would be unlikely, unless they can manage to get some from China which I find very very unlikely.

Narnia has passed away at the Moskvarium, the cause of death has been revealed as acute intestinal volvulus (twisted intestine). It is unclear when this happened due to a necropsy having already taken place but it is likely to be late December, possibly early January. This leaves Moskvarium with one male, Nord, and one female, Naya (formerly Juliet).

Sad news to have yet another orca death. Narnia was the first ever orca successfully captured in Russian Orcas and was estimated to be born in 2006, so she would've been only 16/17 years of age at the time of her death.

Narnia died soon after the new year too, according to some sources.

On the topic of captive orcas too; I recently read up that two calves have apparently been born at Chimelong, according to China Cetacean Alliance.

It has been rumored that the first calf may have been born in October 2019. There is also unconfirmed information that a second calf may have also been born between January 2021 and February 2022.

This hasn't been officially been confirmed by Chimelong as the orcas are still not yet on display.

This has been all over ceta twitter for years now.

I'm often on ceta socials (albeit twitter); but I had never heard of this so thought it would be interesting to mention. Chimelong would have the largest pod of captive orcas in the world if these births are in fact true.

From the pictures that were released a few years ago from the holding facility, there were only six individuals seen, it is unclear if the other three are still alive or if they are being held in another location, I believe they are supposed to have five males and four females - potentially comprised of the three that were held with Narnia after their capture that she encouraged to accept fish from people - 'Tyson', 'Orpheus' and 'Grace'.
