cassowary male

Most Cassowary valuable to breeding programmes as they are quite threatened. I imagin they would be very difficult to get hold of! Why and how do you keep them?

cassowary

I keep them because they are awesome animals. Why wouldn't anyone want them? I breed them(try) and value them as very important animals that the world ignores. At least there are a few of us that see's cassowaries for the beautiful creature they are, and want to help propagate them. They are no more difficult to keep than the other ratites, they are just harder to breed, and not nearly as productive. Also, they arent anywhere near as ferocious and dangerous as what people lead them on to be. I have yet to come across a cassowary that I can't handle, but I have seen several Adult male Ostrich's that I wouldnt dare mess with.

I saw your site. Pretty interesting stuff, man. Cassowaries are one of my favorites to see in zoos. I never knew that their temperments were exaggerated. I was at the San Francisco Zoo about ten years ago minding my own business only to have a cassowary charge at me, clawing at the chain link fence of his enclosure. I've been a fan of them ever since!

Thank you. All in all they are all bark and no bite. They are potentially more aggressive than the other ratites, but if you stand your ground and show them your not afraid, they will usually run the other way or leave you alone. I have seen a few that are a exception. Also, they lose all fear of anything when they have eggs or chicks...then I dont mess with them. I have learned a trick....cutting their spikes off. They grow back, but this makes them no more dangerous than the pain of the kick haha.
