The Cat Survival Trust Cat Survival Trust

Received this in a newsletter from Hertfordshire Zoo today:

The Big Cat Sanctuary, to rescue and rehome 28 rare and endangered cats from The Cat Survival Trust, Welwyn.

Working collaboratively with police, local authorities, and veterinary teams, our dedicated staff have taken on the crucial tasks of vaccinating, feeding, cleaning, and providing care for these vulnerable animals while suitable new homes are found.

To date, 14 of the 28 cats have been successfully rehomed, including Frank, the UK’s only Asian Golden Cat, who has found a forever home at The Big Cat Sanctuary.

As did I. The newsletter, and subsequent article, does not pull any punches! Sadly, it looks like it’s too late for some of the cats.

How this man was not locked up I’ll never know.

Also on the BBC after the Hertfordshire zoo released a statement - they note some of the cats won’t be able to be rehomed due to significant health issues.

Hertfordshire Zoo re-homes cats after convicted owner mauled
I think this relates to the snow leopards, jaguar (born in 2004) and Amur leopard(s). The jaguar I was surprised to see featured on Hertfordshire’s video, as I was convinced it had passed away considering its age.

Would the golden cat not be a valuable breeding animal for a dwindling species in European zoos? Is he closely related to the animals on the Continent? I can't see his origins on Zootierliste.

The BBC article mentions Terrence Moore is due to be sentenced next week, so assume this is some sort of postponed sentencing from the original trial as that process appears to have dragged on.

Moore is due to be sentenced on 23 January.

Which zoo sent a Golden Cat ( or any others!) to this place, in the first place??

I believe he is too old to breed, since he was said to already be old when he went to the Cat Survival Trust.

Which wasn't actually true, as he was only about eight years old at the time - the actual issue is that the only unpaired female in Europe at the time Parc des Felins put him onto the surplus list was not only his sibling, but came from the exact same litter.

He's definitely too old now, though.

Parc des Felins, per the above :)

The Cats have been gradually leaving over the past few weeks

2 Serval have gone to Wingham

1 Bobcat, 2 Lynx and 2 Puma have moved to a private collection in the UK. 6 more Puma will follow (to the same collection) later this month

The Asian Golden Cat has retired to another UK collection (he is not on display)

Nothing has been confirmed about the other cats yet.

This place popped up on Facebook other day and looking at the posts this is Private collection you are referring to

Last heard he was to lose lower part of his leg after the Puma bite so might be the hold up.

Don't believe the lies that has been said about this place, i used to volunteer here, i was even prevented from entering while the police got their "evidence" they had arrived very early in the morning to get pictures before the enclosures had been cleaned (like they are every morning), if the place was so bad then why were volunteers prevented from looking after the animals? so the police could get their "evidence" to try and close the place down. the place had passed every inspection since 1976, dispite the very little money coming in, looks like this is just a land grab after the owner kept refusing offers of millions and millions to sell the land for development, it was always his wish that any unwanted cats would have somewhere to go rather than be killed, but now the only place in the uk that actually takes on unwanted wildcats or ones not good for display because they are old or shy is being closed and the remaining cats due to be killed next week, its heartbreaking.

I suppose you want us to believe that COVID was a hoax for the government to get hold of the raccoon dogs,at the place and that Terry has a doctorate and a world expert in cat husbandary and he is right that there is only one subspecies of Asian golden cat, and that everything that is been written about the place is lie's, well let me tell you the place was a dump when I visited over 20 years ago with cats in enclosures that were to small and substandard then and things haven't changed since then, you can believe what ever Terry tells you to believe but people have the evidence that the place has always been substandard, but then the place has never held a zoo licence and only ever held a dwal which doesn't hold the scrutiny of a zoo licence.

No, i can only speak for what i know to be false (and there is alot i coud say), why would it be on a zoo licence when its not a zoo? its a sanctuary and operates under a DWA, that has always been made very clear, i believe what i have seen with my own eyes and not lies from someone who hasn't even been there in over 20 years, there was also someone else on here making up claims that money was took for building work that was never carried out, and i can 100% confirm that as false, and i would know, i helped with the building of the new enclosures, but don't just take my word for it, google earth will back it up, as well as showing even more enclosures uncompleted. the old building block from over 20 years ago which was built to the regulation of its time has only been used for the small cats for many years now. they can only be built as big as planning permission allows which it no fault of the sanctuary.

It can be called by any name but that doesn't change the fact that it is a zoo.

It's not, but if they can't make enclosures big enough to sufficiently house some animals, they shouldn't keep those species. And maybe it's just the angle of the photos and how they don't show all of it, but the snow leopard and puma enclosures looks quite small.

Terrence Moore was convicted of four charges of causing unnecessary suffering of an animal and seven of using an animal species for commercial gain without a licence at St Albans Crown Court. You can call that lies and made up I suppose, but when the animals received little or no vet treatment due to the owner's beliefs, good intentions (which the Judge clearly acknowledged in stating the suffering caused was not intentional) didn't make up for that. I hope you weren't volunteering on the premises while that went on.

It can be called by any name but that doesn't change the fact that it is a zoo.

As I recall from one of the many conspiracy-theory-filled posts made by Moore on the FB page for the collection over the years, one of his stated reasons for avoiding a zoo licence was a belief that the zoo licensing system was all part of a conspiracy by the Powers That Be to keep tabs on him

but don't just take my word for it, google earth will back it up,

And maybe it's just the angle of the photos and how they don't show all of it, but the snow leopard and puma enclosures looks quite small.

Okay - we won't just take your word for it, and will consult the exact resource you suggest!

The satellite image used on Google Maps and Earth is pretty poor, but using the higher quality image available through the satellites.pro website to locate what appears to be the largest single enclosure (making the assumption this will be the snow leopard exhibit) and then returning to Google Maps to determine the size of said enclosure shows it is shockingly small.

For comparison, assuming this is indeed the snow leopard exhibit given the fact it is the largest visible enclosure, and also assuming that I haven't combined multiple enclosures and it is therefore even smaller than I think, the Chester Zoo exhibit for the species is just under ten times the size at 2,038.90 m² total.

It was not a zoo it was a sanctuary, run entirely by volunteers, no one made any commercial gain, the small amount of money made from photography days and donations went to looking after the cats

the same court where it was said that homes had been found for all the animals! it was a lie to secure a conviction. the wildcat was taken to the vet, where they gave him treatment which did not improve his absces so he was taken back again then they put him down, the jungle cat died suddenly over night which was very unexpected, and the caracal was taken to the vet, where he had a hernia which they could not do anything for so he was put down, the 4th one relates to a domestic cat which i have no idea about so cant offer any info

google maps gives me a calculation of 121m area for the snow leopard enclosure at Hertfordshire zoo, which would mean that it was not in violation of the zoo licencing requirements, that they didn't even need to follow as they were not a zoo so weren't licenced as one, they took in the cats that zoos did not want, most of the cats there were small cats which most zoos don't even bother displaying as they don't bring in money, and the few big cats were old so obviously weren't going to be doing much running around anyway, the jaguar is 20 years old, and i am so scared about what is going to happen to her.
