Very sad news of a Javan Rhino found shot dead with it's horn removed in the Cat Tien National Park in Vietnam with only around 5-6 known in the park.

I hope the group left in West Java can get extra protection now since the price of Rhino horn seems to be at a long time high. :(

I understand that the poaching of all rhinos is on the increase agan.

Yes it is Jay there has been a number of Black and Sumatran also Indian rhino deaths in resent times due to the increase in poaching

The WWF website states the price rhino horn hit a 15 year high in 2009, looks like the little group in Vietnam is real trouble now

And all for the same stuff our fingernails are made off. Such superstition is hard for me to understand.

Many people wouldn't agree, but I believe that the only hope for Sumatran and Javan rhinos is captive breeding. (I know,I know! There have been some miserable failures trying this; but it's time for a full-on attempt by the most skilled people in the world. A half-hearted attempt is not enough.)

I don't know if moving the remaining animals to captivity is the answer or not. What I do know is that they wouldn't be poached for folk medicine in a Western zoo.

I agree. My biggest concern though, would be the level of stress for certain species. Especially the Javan. But I believe the risk of capture for say, one pair, would be worth experimentation. The other foreseeable problem, might be finding 1.1 of this highly endangered rhino in the wild to pair up.
