Werribee Open Range Zoo Changes at Weribee Zoo! (lions)

i'm still reeling from steve comment about the males being heterozygous for white.

i don't think diluting the white gene through the general lion population is particularly responsible.

I spose we are all too busy worrying about Tigers/Elephants/Rhino's and gorillas to have worried about lions before.

well I can (and maybe others that visited recently?) that two lions WHERE taken off display for a period of time ;) We'll see if anything comes of it in the next few months I guess!

Nope, but then I am not convinced preserving white gene lions in zoos is a great conservation rationale and ethic either.

I do wish that - with the current status of African lions in the wild - that we progressively phase out the generics and whites in favour of pure-bred lions wild-caught from Africa now before it is bloody too late (in hind-sight) and start creating some valid conservation breeding programmes for admittedly the most favored zoo animal .... around.
