Some of New Animals and Departing Animal Species/Sbsp in some of Australian zoos and animal parks during 2024

These are some of the new arrival (some returning species and sometimes subspecies) to some of the zoos and wildlife parks in Australia in the year 2024 and also departing species from certain zoos and parks. There will be plenty missing so please contribute if you can. Just a mini summary of last year with departures and new arrivals. Big thanks to all of you, everyone who found out all this news over the year and posted about it throughout last year including alphabetically:

Adelaide Zoo
- Crested Porcupines arrived in May 2024.
- New Giant Pandas pair Xing Qiu & Yi Lan 1.1 arrived in December 2024 (and Fu Ni & Wang Wang returned to China in November 2024).
- No longer has Lions after the deaths of their remaining pair, 0.1 Amani & 1.0 Mujambi (October 2024).
- (2022 news announced in 2024 on ZC) Pygmy Marmosets are no longer held (female moved to Mogo in October 2022).
- Buna 0.1 the last Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo at the zoo died.

Altina Wildlife Park
- many births and new arrivals throughout the year. Lowland Nyalas arriving in Novemebr 2024 were a new species to the park who joined the regional breeding program.
Australia Zoo
- Binturongs are no longer held (siblings Jaya and Pip passed away earlier in 2024).
- Aviary updates: Recently removed Gouldian Finch, Eastern Whipbird, Peaceful Dove, and Superb Fairywren.

Billabong Zoo
- Orange-bellied Parrot(s) arrived in January 2024.

Central Coast Zoo
- Caracal(s) arrived at the zoo in July 2024.
- Red-handed Tamarins and a male Yellow Anaconda arrived October 2024.
Darling Downs Zoo
some very cool happening in 2024 as always, awesome stuff Steve Robinson.
- The zoo acquired Major Mitchell's Cockatoo in or before January 2024
- Little Penguins arrived in late July 2024 from Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, additional Little Penguins arrived shortly after from Billabong Zoo
- 2.1 Spotted Hyena arrive at the zoo from South Africa in early August 2024
- The zoo acquired (some cases reacquired) a male Black-necked Stork, White-breasted Ground Dove, Alexandrine Parakeet, Centralian Blue-tongued Lizard
- Whiptail Wallabies return to the zoo, and Tammar Wallabies possibly a new species for the zoo

- Brown-nosed Coatis gone (January? 2024).

Halls Gap Zoo
- female Brown Capuchin 0.1 Frankie born at the zoo before June 2024
- in early September 2024 2.1 Serval kittens arrived at the zoo. Sadly in late September they fell unwell and were taken to Werribee to receive highest veterinary care and the two male kittens unfortunately passed. The female Zuri recovered to a stable condition (believe is still at Werribee).
- The zoo had a close brush with the Grampian bushfires in December. Know we all wish Halls Gap a much better 2025 than their hardships of late 2024.
Healesville Sanctuary
- Regents Honeyeaters added to the Fighting Extinction Aviary.
- Leadbeater’s Possums are no longer on display (as of October 2024).

Hunter Valley Wildlife Park
- Jabari 1.0 the Cheetah who left for Mogo for breeding in December 2023 returned to Hunter Valley in April 2024
- in July 2024 several transfer of Lions (white-coated) to Mogo, unsure where this leaves Hunter Valley's white-coated Lion population.
- The first Giraffe born at the park in September 2024
Mansfield Zoo
- The zoo acquired Black-capped Capuchins in or before January 2024.
Melbourne Zoo
- Veiled Chameleon arrived in July 2024.
- King Cobra arrived in May 2024.
- Lowland Nyalas (all females?) arrived July? 2024.
- Bell's Hingeback Tortoise arrived in November 2024.
- No longer keeps Giant Green Tree Frog and Eastern Banjo Frog.
- Added Splendid Frog and Watson's Tree Frog.
- New species on display: Eyelash Viper (housed with Cardinal Tetra and Otocinclus Catfish).
- Boyd’s Forest Dragons arrived and living in the Frog House.
- Komodo Dragon 1.0 Khan arrived in (December?) 2024 from ARP where he was born in 2022.

Mogo Wildlife Park
- Western Lowland Gorillas at the park fully integrated in April 2024
- Koala arrived in June 2024 (first time zoo has had species since the 1990s).
- no longer have Lar Gibbons.
- (from what understand) new Caracals arrived at the park
- several births few out the year, most recently: 0.1 female Giraffe born to mother Tuli on 28 December 2024 (and a Plains Zebra filly earlier that month too)

Monarto Safari Park
- Asian Elephant 0.1 Burma relocated to Monarto from Auckland Zoo in early November 2024. And the park prepares for the arrival of Permai 0.1 from Perth, Putra Mas 1.0 from Perth and Pak Boon & Tang Mo 0.2 from Taronga.
- Mesopotamian Fallow Deer moved off public display for work on the Asian Elephant habitats.
- multiple species births throughout the year and wild release programs for native animals.

Moonlit Sanctuary
- had many exciting new additions throughout 2024 (awesome stuff as always MRJ) such as
- the arrival of Black Kites and Peregrine Falcons in February 2024
- Northern Death Adder arrived in June 2024 (first venomous snake at the park), followed in
July 2024 (with the unveiling of the park's reptile centre) of Chappell Island Tiger Snake (named Rhaenyra) and Boyd's Forest Dragons
-the park's first Quokka in October 2024
- 2 new Green Tree Pythons arrived in December 2024 aswell as Growling Grass Frogs and Spiny Leaf Insects
National Zoo & Aquarium
-a Leachie gecko arrived from Taronga in April 2024
-a new saltwater pool in or before September 2024 including a Common Stingaree and 3 Port Jackson shark
by November 2024 they were joined by 3 Eastern Fiddler Ray and 1 Eastern Shovelnose Ray
Perth Zoo
- No longer holds Western Quoll/Chuditch or Dampier Peninsula Rock Monitor (as of April 2024 or before).
- Reduced native species programs include 66 Dibblers and 118 White-bellied Frogs moved offsite (October 2024).
- Oldest of zoo's two male Galapagos Tortoises Sierra 1.0 euthanised aged 53 however his younger brother Cerro still alive and well at the zoo.

Rockhampton Zoo
- several new arrivals during the year including 3.0 Sun Conures and 5 Frill-necked Lizards in April 2024, 0.2 Green-winged Macaws in early July 2024 and 2 Sacred Kingfishers in late December 2024.
- The zoo sadly lost 0.1 Samantha the Chimpanzee in February 2024, but as of the other day still has 4.2 Chimpanzees including new arrival 0.1 Sile the other day (2025) from Sydney Zoo.
Shoalhaven Zoo
- Golden Lion Tamarins arrive (from Adelaide Zoo) & Red-rumped Agouti arrive in November 2024.

Snakes Down Under
- Fijian Crested Iguana arrived in December 2024.
Symbio Wildlife Park
- No longer hold Common Marmosets (transferred them to Gumbuya).
Sydney Zoo
- Fat-tailed Dunnart reacquired.
- Connected Yellow-bellied and Squirrel Glider exhibits now include a Long-nosed Potoroo.
- Merten's Water Monitor replaced Eastern Water Dragon in the riparian-themed tank.
- Smooth Yabbies added to the penguin tank.
- Spotted Gar signed for cichlid tank but not observed.
- Aquarium updates in second-to-last tank include Guppy, Tiger Barb, Murray River Rainbowfish, and Glowlight Tetra.

Taronga Zoo
- (will be plenty of other arrivals and departures that missed such as birds and invertibrates)
- ARC (Amphibian & Reptile Centre) opened late June 2024 (several new and returning species include): Alligator Snapping Turtle, Emerald Tree Monitor, (Lace Monitors possibly reacquired if not already there in the Institute of Science' complex prior) and Veiled Chameleon (returning species. Veiled Chameleons also returned to the Australian Reptile Park in August 2024)
- Caledonian Giant Gecko transferred to the National Zoo & Aquarium (April 2024).
- Freshwater crocodiles depart the zoo amongst the reptiles phased out when Serpentaria/Reptile World closed
- No longer has Arabian Camels (Ras euthanised and Storm returned to Western Plains Zoo).
- Male Pygmy Hippo Fergus 1.0 died (Taronga still has 0.2 Pygmy Hippos though Kambiri and her daughter Lololi).
- Eyelash Viper possibly passed away.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo
- Many Platypuses arrive at the zoo as the zoo's state-of-the-art Platypus Rescue HQ is completed and opens in February 2024
- the zoo acquired White-browed Woodswallows sometime early in the year.
- announced in late March 2024, (though not a new or departing species) a female Black-handed Spider Monkey was born at the zoo (increasingly rare to have births of this species in Australia due to dwindling number of the species) and joins parents as well as 3 other BH Spider Monkeys born in 2023 and late 2022.
- several other births including double Black Rhinoceros births within the year (unfortunately a stillbirth for one though), and several Giraffes born during the spring of 2024
- Last two King Cheetahs died before June 2024.
- 2 new male Cheetahs 2.0 Ichabod and Lee imported from the US to join the zoo's other Cheetahs.
- Red Kangaroos and Red-necked Wallabies returned to the zoo in December 2024. The Red Kangaroos arrival meant the zoo again had captive Kangaroos since the zoo's last Western Grey Kangaroos had left in 2021 (although there are Eastern Grey Kangaroos in the grounds, they are wild).

Tasmania Zoo
- Banduka 1.0 the Sri Lankan Leopard arrived at the zoo in January 2024, from Darling Downs Zoo (where he was born).
- 2 (1.1) Plains Zebra arrive from Werribee & Darlings Downs Zoo in May 2024.
- Lara 0.1 the zoo's last Mandrill died in or before August 2024 after being at the zoo 15 years.
- Ceda 0.1 the last Sulawesi Crested Macaque in the the country and region died in or before August 2024 after being at the zoo since 2008 (she was originally from Perth Zoo).
- 2 year old male Spotted Hyena 1.0 arrived from South Africa in or before early October 2024.

Territory Wildlife Park
-2 Australian Owlet-Nightjars arrived at the park in November 2024, Mud Crab added to the park's aquarium in October, and Common Planigale amongst animals bred last year
Werribee Open Range Zoo
- multiple births including Southern White Rhinoceros calves
- one year old female Waterbuck 0.1 Nziza arrived from Monarto
- The zoo took care of 2.1 Serval kittens brought by Halls Gap Zoo in late September for veterinary care of which the female Zuri recovered.
- The zoo prepares for the arrival of Asian Elephant herd from Melbourne Zoo

Wild Cat Conservation Centre
- 0.1 Mirri the Clouded Leopard born in December 2024 to parents 0.1 Moana and 1.0 Mark. Mirri is the first Clouded Leopard to be born in Australia.

- Sari 1.0 the zoo's Binturong (b.2008) passed away on 29 May 2024

- the zoo reacquired Short-beaked Echidna in November 2024

- No longer have Crabeating Macaques (species also phased out of Wings Wildlife Park & Green Valley Farm). This may have happened previous years.

- The zoo took care of 2.1 Serval kittens brought by Halls Gap Zoo in late September for veterinary care of which the female Zuri recovered.
- The zoo prepares for the arrival of Asian Elephant herd from Melbourne Zoo

Wild Cat Conservation Centre
- 0.1 Mirri the Clouded Leopard born in December 2024 to parents 0.1 Moana and 1.0 Mark. Mirri is the first Clouded Leopard to be born in Australia.

- 2 Western Shingleback Lizards arrived at the zoo in mid-May 2024
- Sari 1.0 the zoo's Binturong (b.2008) passed away on 29 May 2024
- on a happier note Maned Wolf pups were born in August 2024 to 0.1 Eartha and 1.0 Eberardo
- the zoo reacquired Short-beaked Echidna in November 2024

- No longer have Crabeating Macaques (species also phased out of Wings Wildlife Park & Green Valley Farm). This may have happened previous years.
