Charles Paddock Zoo Charles Paddock Zoo News

What are the names of the animals in the future Indo-Burma exhibit?
Probably best to message the zoo on social media or give them a phone call. I bet they’d be a better help than here.

An opening date was finally set for the red panda exhibit. The grand opening will be March 2nd.

"This beautiful, new Indo-Burma experience at the Charles Paddock Zoo features various species of mammals, reptiles, and birds from this region of the world, including the Red Panda, Binturong, Chinese Muntjac, Asian Brown Tortoise, Asian Ratsnake, Nicobar Pigeon, Black-Naped Fruit Dove, Laughing Thrush, Red Vented Bulbul and Lady Amherst Pheasant. Other animals from this region are also on exhibit at the Zoo, including the Malayan Tiger and Prevost’s Squirrel."

I've never been any of the handful of times I have been through Atascadero, but that sounds like a nice little mix of species for a zoo of its size, and I hope this begins a transformation for this tiny AZA zoo.

It's a nice little zoo. It has an interesting collection and some nice exhibits, some 1960s exhibits that need replacement, and an ambitious staff that is working to modernize the place.

You know, I think that describes of a lot of the smaller AZA establishments that lack the resources of San Diego, Omaha, WCS, and some other big names.

I plan on visiting this zoo in the next few days, so I'll be sure to get photos of the new red panda exhibit, as well as anything else that has changed since 2015 when the last media from there were uploaded.

Check out the elephant seal colony just down the highway in San Simeon too if you get a chance. There's also a nice small botanic garden in San Luis Obispo if you like botanic gardens - lots of birds there too. SLO Botanical Garden

There is a raft of a dozen or more sea otters down by Morro Rock in Morro Bay, and peregrine falcons nesting on the rock usually.

Awesome, thanks for the info! Incidentally, I actually was planning on going to the elephant seal colony (both that and the zoo are side stops on my way to/from Pinnacles for condor spotting), but I was unaware of the garden, sea otters, and falcons. I was already just strongly considering hitting up Fresno Zoo on the same trip... now I've got to figure out how to fit everything in :p

And if you're in Pinnacles you'll be fairly close to Monterey Bay Aquarium...

I was planning on visiting Monterey as I've never been before, but the aquarium is too expensive for me to be very interested in visiting right now. I've heard it's one of the best in the US along with Shedd and Georgia (both of which I've been to), but those facilities offer more to see. Maybe I'll ask for some opinions from others and entertain the idea a little more.

It's the best zoo on the planet.

@Coelacanth18 Both Fresno Zoo and Monterey Bay Aquarium are great and I would highly recommend you try to stop at at least one of them. Fresno Chaffee Zoo is much cheaper, but also sounds like it would be further out of the way so perhaps saving the gas money and going to the Aquarium would be smarter. It would be a shame if you don't make it to at least one of them, but that's sometimes just the way it goes. Enjoy your trip!!!

Yes, Monterey Bay Aquarium is definitely the best zoo on the planet...except for Berlin, Berlin Tierpark, Prague, Chester, San Diego, Bronx, Omaha, Sedgwick County, Saint Louis, Columbus, Woodland Park, Shedd, Georgia, Vienna, Leipzig, Singapore, Osaka, Okinawa, Oceanografic Valencia, Lisbon Oceanarium, Rotterdam, Arnhem, Beauval, Wroclaw, Pairia Daiza, probably Antwerp and Amsterdam, Zurich, etc.

After those 28 zoos then Monterey Bay Aquarium is the best. Ha! :p And I just went with ones off the top of my head...

You haven't even been to most of those places, snowy. Let's just agree to disagree.

It appears that the Fisher may have passed away or been transferred at some point soon after my visit... at least one of its two enclosures (maybe both) has housed Curl-crested Aracaris since mid-2018. The aracari is a new species for the zoo and is listed on the zoo's website, while Fisher is not.

Also, according to the zoo's Instagram their Fossa passed away recently. It's currently unclear whether they will get a new one or phase the species out while work is done on renovating/building a new Madagascar-themed area.
