I visited Charles Town Landing State Historic Park, in Charleston, South Carolina, after visiting Oatland Island State Wildlife Center a couple hours down the coast in Georgia. The two sites have similar collections. I enjoyed Oatland Island more, but Charles Towne Landing came onto radar years and years ago when it was mentioned in an article regarding changes to the Low Country of South Carolina. I lost my chance to see the Low Country Zoo at Brookgreen Gardens further up the coast towards Myrtle Beach.

Below is a list of the species and number of animals observed during my visit on a warm Saturday afternoon:

Mammals - 100% estimated accuracy:
Grey Squirrel* - 9
Red Wolf - 1
River Otter - 2
American Black Bear - 1
Domestic Goat - 2
Domestic Sheep - 2
Domestic Cattle - 2
Plains Bison - 5
Wapiti - 1
Whitetail Deer - 4

No Shows -
Cougar
Striped Skunk
Bobcat

Birds - 95% estimated accuracy:
Wild Turkey - 5
Black Vulture - 1
Turkey Vulture - 2
Brown Pelican - 8
Great Blue Heron - 2
Yellow-Crowned Night Heron - 1
Black-Crowned Night Heron - 1
Ring-billed Gull - 5
Double-crested Cormorant - 1
Anhinga* - 1

No shows -
Bald Eagle (Saw a signpost directing visitor’s to the “Eagles”, but I never found the exhibit).
Great Egret
White Ibis

Reptiles:

Gopher Tortoise - 1

In the shorebird aviary there were two species of pond turtle 3 / 4 individual animals. I’ll try identify them when I check the tape.

I’m going to say that the shorebird exhibit was the best.
